Trust is not a Four-Letter Word

by Enoch Kwame Tham-Agyekum

Trust is one element that holds society together. It is what keeps the relationship between a bank officer and the client to go on smoothly. Between a husband and a wife, trust must exist else the marriage will be hanging on rocks. The congregation and their pastor must enjoy a certain level of trust to keep the ministry going so that the salvation of many are not put under a basket. The lawyer and the client must enjoy some trust to know that proceedings were done right. Two young lovers must trust each other to keep their relationship going. The teacher and the student are no different; they each must come to a point where they do not mishandle each other. In all the sphere of life, trust is of relevance to keep two or more people moving together. We need to also trust our supreme God else our life on this earth will be in shambles. God must also trust us in order to be able to make us handle certain blessings else we will mess up big time.

Do you remember the last time you reminded your spouse of simple task because you were scared they will forget as usual. You can check up on your child or even friend several times within the day just because you are not confident they will apply the task. The reason some of us press for details is because we do not trust the other party. We only rely on others when we have come to a halt in our plans. A manager is not able to delegate tasks to subordinates because of the lack of trust. After praying, we find ourselves seeking for ways we can make it happen on our own. When God has given us a sure word about our future, we keep nagging and complaining. Trust is that element that is needed to keep relationships going. It is hard to trust any man. The outcome of our trust in man is that it will not end us well. 2 Kings 18:21 says, "Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him". Just like the way King Pharoah died miserally, so is the end of the man that puts his or her trust in any man.

We easily fear people will let us down or cheat on us. Instead of trust, we fear. The worst part is when we fear that God would let me down. Fear is the result of such an encounter. When our friends let us down, it is very difficult to open up again to them. Fear is a four letter word but Trust is a five letter word. Fear has taken the most part of us in our daily lives. The foundation with which we can build our trust is destroyed by fear. The marital problems we perceive deep down our hearts, the financial burdens, the sleepless nights, the stubborn children, the unfaithful husband or wife produce fear in us. Once bitten, twice we are shy. Fear is what is standing between us and others and it keeps preventing us from taking our blessings boldly.

Sometimes we have so much faith in ourselves that we forget that without Christ, we are really nothing and all our achievements do not matter to Him. Our wisdom is foolishness to Him, our righteousness is as a filthy rag before Him, our strength is weakness to Him, our possessions are nothing before Him and our plans are do not really matter to Him. The word trust is explained in Psalm 18:2, "The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower". Maybe you have been relying on your own self all the time, it is time to also rest in the shadow of another; God, your spouse, sibling, colleague etc. Ruth 2:12 affirms this and says that "The LORD repay your work, and a full reward be given you by the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge". The picture being painted here is that Ruth run and hid herself under the wing of Boaz from difficult circumstances surrounding her life. What we fail to recognise is that when we trust in God, He brings our way the right people who can be of blessing to us. When we do this, it gives others the confidence to shield and cover us.

Our experiences are meant to build us and encourage us that all the seasons are not the same. There is day and there is also a night. Our faith is built, our love is strengthened and our reliance on God gets unwavering. As we go on in this experience, God requires more of our trust. The man who desires to go through this experience with God is strengthened in his trust in the Will of God. We get to know the Lord more deeply and appreciate all the things He does on our behalf. "As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him" (2 Samuel 22:31).

The truth remains people will let you down. Yes, that is the truth. Man may always fall short of our expectation but trust God to use them to always be a channel of blessing to us. Imagine those God has put over you in leadership as a strong refuge and shield for you to lean on. Trust God in them! We can expect God to step in and make up for the mistakes others have made. If we are not relating well with other people, it means that we have no trust for them. It is time for us to stop and take a deeper look at ourselves, see where we have fallen short and rise up again.

At the end of the day, it is when we come to the place where we completely acknowledge Him, then His might and strength is displayed in us. We shine like the morning star and our strivings can reach to the farthest extent. We are able to trust in the unfailing love of God and this trust to an extent helps us to relate with men. A renowned Woman of God once said that if she struggles to trust her own husband, what chance does the Lord have? When we do not trust the people around us, it will be difficult for God to bless them through us. Expect them to succeed and live up to God's expectation. This is a powerful force that has the potential to bring real change to your life. It is time to take a risk. It is time to put aside your fear and choose to trust. Fear is one short of the word 'trust'.

A lover of Christ, His message, His works, His character, His conviction, His holiness, His glory, His love, His grace, His righteousness. HE is ALL
