Personal Revelation

by Jerry Ousley
10/10/2014 / Christian Living

Most of my life I guess I've been a pretty gullible guy. Unless it is so fantastic that it's obviously not true, I normally believe what I'm told until the source is proven wrong. One of Debbie's brothers had tragically died. It was a devastating blow to the entire family. She had been named as the Estate Executor since he was divorced at the time and he had no children.

He had been self-employed most of his life in his own concrete finishing business and because he didn't have a family to take care of, had been able to save and invest in the stock market. This was before the big crash and the economy went south so he had done quite well for himself. Of course Deb wanted to do the best she could for the family and in so doing made every attempt to find all the money available to the estate.

Her brother hadn't completely trusted banks and people and so when a nephew told us about a safe he had found in his uncle's bedroom we listened intently. He sat in our living room and explained that just after Deb's brother had died he had gone in and sat on his bed, supposedly thinking about the loss of his uncle. While there he claimed to have discovered a safe in the floor under the carpet of the bedroom. He told his story in such a way that it left no room for doubt.

The next morning, bright and early Deb and I decided that we were going to find this safe, remove its contents and make certain that they were made a part of the estate. We made the trip to her deceased brother's home and immediately went into the bedroom. We felt all around the carpet finding nothing. We began to get a bit suspicious. We painstakingly removed all the furniture from the room, took up the carpet and padding underneath and all we found was a solid concrete floor no safe anywhere. This young man had sat in our living room and conjured up a story right before our eyes. He had lied without remorse. I was angry enough to eat nails and spit out angle iron! We had been duped by our own nephew! The point is that I received a personal revelation about this young man and folks I haven't believed a word he's said since. My personal revelation of him resulted in complete distrust in any of his future stories.

Personal revelation is a fact we can rely on. In finding out just who God is, we've discussed how He is revealed by His nature. We've looked at wrong views of God, examined His various names and talked about historical proof. But when it comes right down to it there's no better way to discover God and find out Who He is than having a personal experience with Him.

We can hear stories of other people about how great they are. We can see the results of their magnificent accomplishments. But until we've met them for ourselves we haven't really gotten to know them. It's like that with God. We can read about Him, listen to others tell their own stories and hear all the various concepts concerning Him. But until we get to know Him for ourselves and experience a personal revelation it just doesn't cut the mustard.

He is a great and powerful God. He is a gentle, kind and loving God. Others have related their testimonies and shown the results of their service to Him. But often the proof just isn't good enough until we know for ourselves.

Thomas sometimes gets a bad rap because he doubted. He said that unless he saw the nail prints in His hands and felt the deep cut in His side for himself he wasn't going to believe anybody. He said this concerning the resurrection of Jesus. Our Lord had appeared to them during Thomas' absence. When they told him about it he simply refused to believe until he knew it for himself. Of course it would have been great if he had believed the witness and testimony of the others. But it just wasn't the same. A few days later Jesus appeared again to His disciples and this time Thomas was there. He invited the doubting disciple to put his fingers into the holes in His hands and thrust his hand into His side. The Bible doesn't record that Thomas ever did that because when he witnessed the resurrected Christ for himself he no longer doubted.

There's nothing like our own personal revelation. Let me say in caution that any personal revelation will be within the realms of the Biblical account. But when we have it and if you are seeking for it you will receive it there is no more doubting. We are convinced because now we know for ourselves. Seek the Lord today and He will grant you your own personal revelation.
