Peace-An Important Inheritance From Jesus Christ To Christian Believers

by Ngozi Nwoke
11/25/2014 / Christian Living

Do you know all your inheritance from the Lord? Many people desire to leave things for their loved ones to inherit after their death. Likewise, Christ left us an important inheritance to enjoy while on earth. This post tells you more about this vital inheritance from Jesus Christ.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid - John 14:27 (NKJV)

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus - Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV)

Christ before He left promised to leave His peace for us. This was the peace He had when He was sleeping soundly in the boat while storm was raging (Mark 4:36-41), when He was walking on water (Matthew 14:25-33), and when the soldiers came to arrest Him at Gethsemane (Matthew 26:47-56). He also manifested this peace at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:38-44) and many other places in the scriptures.

Christ's peace (His inheritance unto us) is what you need to go through the storms of life without being a bit perturbed. He is the Prince of peace and in Him alone will you have peace. In this world you will have tribulation, but Christ has assured you, saying, "be of good cheer" for He has overcome the world - John 16:33.

This is the kind of peace that when others are saying there is a casting down, you will be saying there is a lifting up. When Jesus was being persecuted to His crucifixion, the Pharisees were rejoicing that His end was coming, but Christ had peace because it was going to be victory for Him at the end. And when the chief priests and elders accused Him and Pilate queried Him because of them, He never answered a word. He had this peace that the governor marveled greatly (Matthew 27:12-14).

This is the kind of peace that Christ left us for our inheritance that we may unseat the devils around us and enjoy the blessings of our redemption. Out of His abundance of peace has He given us this peace, for no one can give what he does not have.

Characteristics of this inheritance - John 14:27, Philippians 4:7

1. it's different from the world's kind of peace

The world's kind of peace is subject to good situations or outcomes, and so subject to change; when the going is good, you will have peace but when the going is bad, peace disappears.

But this is not the case with Christ's peace. With this inheritance, you will have peace, come rain or sunshine, whether things are good or bad. This makes a Christian believer an overcomer, because all things shall work together for your good - Romans 8:28. You will be smiling, walking head and shoulder high, though fire may be burning on the mountain, because of the peace of God in you.

2. It surpasses all understanding

The peace of God is beyond human reasoning and understanding, it is of God. It can't be explained in anyway, whatsoever. It is purely the finger of God and so can't be contaminated or duplicated. You can only receive it by grace through Christ; it is your inheritance as a child of God.

When Jesus rose up from sleep and commanded the wind to be peaceful and still, His disciples couldn't understand Him, the peace He had and the authority with which He commanded the wind and the sea and they obeyed Him - Mark 4:36-41. You don't need to understand it, just receive it by faith.

3. It guards your heart and mind

Proverbs 4:23 tells us that the issues of life come from the heart and so the heart should be guarded with all diligence. And Paul tells us in Philippians 4:7 that what we need is the peace of God to guard our hearts and minds.

The mind is the seat of wisdom and wrong counsel, when it filtrates into the mind, can corrupt your decision and ultimately your actions. And wrong words and actions can be very costly. But with the peace of God in place, your heart and mind are guarded from unwanted elements and your life and destiny are preserved.

Triggers of this inheritance - Hebrews 11:6, Philippians 6:6-7

1. Faith

You access this inheritance by faith. It has been yours from the time you gave your life to Christ, you only need to reach out and receive it by faith: faith in God and His Son through whom the peace comes on you, and faith in the power of the peace of God.

When you know who you are in Christ, what God says about you and what belongs to you in Christ, your faith will build up. Faith in God causes the word of God to become real and tangible in your life - Hebrews 11:1

2. Prayer and supplication

The scriptures tell us to ask so that we may receive - Matthew 7:7-8. Therefore ask for your inheritance in Christ in prayer and you will receive it. Also, in prayer and supplication, you are in tune with the Prince of peace and so definitely His peace will be rubbed off on you.

In 1 Samuel 1:12-18, Hannah went to pray with a sorrowful spirit but returned with a countenance that was no more sad. Eli said to her "go in peace" and the peace of God was imparted unto her.

3. Thanksgiving

A heart of gratitude unto God is ever peaceful. It says, "God I believe you and your word, and I believe that everything will work out for me, no matter what the situation is saying presently".

Thanksgiving acknowledges what God has done and anticipates better things ahead. This floods peace into your heart.

King David was a man of thanksgiving and in spite of all the wars around him, the peace of God in him delivered him from them all - Psalm 92, Psalm 23:2, 4

Hindrances to its manifestation - - Philippians 4:6-7

1. Anxiety

This is a sign of lack of faith in God and when there is no faith, peace will not be available. Anxiety says to God, "I don't know what you are doing and I don't trust you to handle this issue well". Anxiety blocks you from accessing the voice of God and so no counsel from God to give you peace can get to you.

Christ said you should not allow your heart to be troubled because He has left His peace for you. A troubled mind keeps the peace of God away. Anxiety and peace cannot co-exist in you. Therefore, choose peace and do away with anxiety. Trust in the lord with all your heart; don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path - Proverbs 3:5-6

2. Fear

Another hindrance is fear; it is the opposite of faith. Faith attracts God and all that He offers while fear attracts the devil and all that he offers. So, fear hinders this inheritance from manifesting in your life.

Jesus said you should not let your heart be afraid; His peace is available for you. Fear has torments (1 John 4:18) and they are contrary to peace. Fear opens the door for the enemy to steal more from you but the peace of God empowers you to overcome any challenge.

3. Lack of the word of God

Faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17) and if faith triggers peace, then lack of the word of God will hinder this inheritance from the Lord. The knowledge of what God said about your challenge or situation in the scriptures will surely bring about peace of mind.

When you believe the scriptures as God's words to you (1 Thessalonians 2:13), the peace of God will be imparted into you; for whatsoever things were written in the scriptures were for our learning, that through patience and comfort of the scriptures we might have hope - Romans 15:4. Therefore, not having enough word of God concerning that issue will hinder the peace of God from manifesting in you.

In conclusion, Jesus Christ knew that if you are to operate and overcome in this world successfully and with smiles, you would need His peace. And so having returned back to God, Christ left His peace for as many as would receive Him, so that you will overcome even as He had overcome the world - John 16:33
