The Power of Declarations

by Rev. Dr. R. B. Silverson

A Useful Tool

Life is one continuous mystery; and without a fleck of doubt, there are many things we do not understand but yet benefit from. We do not endlessly argue about certain phenomena like gravity and relativity; we harness them to our advantage. Indeed, one powerful tool at our swift disposal, but often trifled with is words. And this, I explore in-depth in my forthcoming book, Words & Nets. However, on a provided link below, a smorgasbord of pleasant and positive declarations have been tastefully served for one's immediate consideration, delicate digestion, and onward confession. The power of such life-transforming declarations cannot be underrated or underestimated by any shred of the imagination. And perhaps, this brief piece will contribute towards consummate acceptance and concerted action.

In the presented diary of his intense affliction, we hear Job making a fascinating statement worth considering. He averred with unmistakable forthrightness: "Who is he who will contend with me? If now I hold my tongue, I perish" (Job 13:19 NKJV). Perhaps we may interject: Are we keeping quiet and perishing?

A Plethora of Issues

At the beginning of time, in the book of Genesis, we see God setting a very important precedent for us to follow. We are informed, "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters" (Genesis 1:2). Let us summon up our power of clear thought and deep penetration for a minute, and picture what the text portrays. Without form, void, and darkness are words that stand out like famous and noticeable skylines. The conclusive argument has to be: it was not the most pristine of situations or circumstances; bleak, dingy, and depressing to say the least. Indeed, we are confronted by different things that have a striking verisimilitude to the depiction above. Life is visibly laden and fraught with all sorts of challenges. In a bombastic manner, we shall refer to these as manifold asperities, myriad adversities, multiplied difficulties, multitudinous perplexities, and mega complexities. Highfalutin it may sound; but the point is clear: we have many troubles!

With that drab situation described at that primeval stage, what did God do? He spoke! What? He did not curse, cry, blame, or lament, but spoke? "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light" (Genesis 1:3). Notice something impressive here; God did not speak what He saw. He spoke what He desired. And this is a great secret we can learn. What difference does it make when we speak what we see or feel? And this is where several people trip and stumble. In reality, they just say it the way it is. Unsurprisingly, they still have what they continue to say. Prudence suggests that if what a person has is not what they want, they must not keep repeating it. Sadly, such a beautiful lesson is one that many have not learnt. The law of powerful declarations at work here demands that one says what they want to see and not what they are seeing. Practically speaking, God called for light in darkness, and light came. Today, we can also open our mouth and call forth something amazing into being, and that is what will come into existence.

There are captious critics who do not and will never accept such a sensible strategy. In fact, in their stinging criticism and obvious cynicism, they even scold people who say things they expect rather than what they have. Well, there are many such things they criticise, and we may not waste valuable time addressing such folk. It is like being offered a magic wand that can change a person's life; one may either accept it or reject itthe choice is solely theirs. Indeed, the choice to make positive confessions is equally ours. We may accept and harness this medium to our benefit or reject it to our detriment. Either way, we have a decision to make. Moreover, if we choose the former option and utilise such an important strategy, it places us on a sure course for something great, grand, glorious.

Eat The Fruit Of Your Mouth

The Bible tells us from Proverbs 12:14, "A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him." Notice the expression, fruit of his mouth. This truth is repeated again for our attention: "A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence" (Proverbs 13:2). Yes, it is by the fruit of our mouth. Do we flow with the stream or try to question the direction in which it flows? Today, are we willing to make use of our mouth in changing our lives, or shut up and maintain the status quo?

Without fail we must open our mouth, but when we do, we must be careful what we say. Never again should we say something we do not wish to see happen in our lives. This is a sound truth with sound biblical basis, "20 A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof" (Proverbs 18:20-21). The light of truth shines through any fog of darkness: our words can kill or make alive!

The prophet Hosea for example demonstrates God as slaying the people with His words, Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth (Hosea 6:5).

Starting from today, we are on course for a change if we can open our mouth and make the right declarations over our lives. This is not wishful thinking. I once stated, "Your mouth sows; your life reaps." This six-word quote we will do well to remember. Beginning from now, we must make positive statements over every area of our lives. And we shouldn't just use empty words; we must believe what we say. Apostle Paul wrote, "We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak" (2 Corinthians 4:13). Furthermore, Job 22:28 promises, "Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways."

As promised above, the link for the declarations is given below. All the declarations are rooted in the Scriptures. In fact, most are even direct quotations of Scripture. This is to ensure that whatever we declare aligns with what God desires for us.
