You May Not Agree That America Is Broken

by Dr. Henderson Ward
12/02/2014 / Christian Living

I have come to the conclusion, and to be frank I am not too bothered if you do not agree with me, that the only thing we can absolutely agree on is that we are eternally disagreeable.

Whatever I say or do, or even think or believe, there are those who will jump to oppose, to argue against or to repudiate; even when they have no real basis for doing so.

Let us be absolutely honest and admit that people have acquired a tendency, a relish, a passion to tear down rather than to build up. You have only to look at the so-called Mainstream Media to see proof of this indictment.

The Mainstream Media and especially the so-called Tabloids, go to extremes to dig up dirt, uncover filth, publicise smut, highlight human failings and the dark side of humanity in unconscionable ways and often gratuitously.

Sometimes they even manufacture such titivating stories to get your attention and sell more advertising space not caring that they are injuring the nation.

This passion for tearing down, for destruction, for negativity reaches a zenith when the ungodly elements in our society turn their attention to the church and people of faith.

When last have you read or saw in the Mainstream Media something meritorious about Church and the people of God?

Every single day the Church and the people of God are doing great and noble things in communities everywhere and they scarcely get a mention, or register a blip on the consciousness of the nation.

But let some obscure preacher, or a church with a handful of members decide to burn the Quran, or do something equally bizarre, and what happens.

It goes national and the Mainstream Media treats it as if it is the only thing worth mentioning of the life and work of the church.

This negativity, this relish to tear down and destroy anything connected with the church and God seems to be the way the Western world is going.

It is as if the concept of the Bible, God and Christianity is something new, alien and incompatible with normal living, and strangely the concept seems to be most reviled in the United States of America.

This is bizarre, and ironic, because the United States of America, unlike most countries on earth, although not having a theocratic constitution, nevertheless, was founded and based on Christian principles.

The America of today, if revisited by the original founders, would not be recognised as the country they founded and established as a countervail to the moral, and spiritual, regression of Europe from which they fled.

Most Americans, today, do not know what it is, really, to be American, they know only what the talking heads, the celebrities, the rich exploiters and their spin doctors and the supine Mainstream Media tell them.

And what they are told contradict and demean what the founding fathers intended America to be.

America was not founded to be an irreligious people dominated by a powerful lite of robber barons masquerading as secular political leaders. They were to be a people of faith living their life under the banner of God.

Here is the evidence directly from the lips of some of the founders themselves:

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." John Adams, October 11, 1798.

"God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift from God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever." Thomas Jefferson. (A combination of two quotes)

"It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and Bible" (Reportedly) George Washington.

"Those who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants." -William Penn (founder of the Province of Pennsylvania).

" We've staked our future on our ability to follow the Ten Commandments with all of our heart." - James Madison, 1778, to the General Assembly of the State of Virginia.

I posit that America's prosperity is based largely on it's people being spiritual, with a sense of moral responsibility based on the authority of the Bible, and a sense of fairness and justice for all.

I posit further that America's decline and present woes have more to do with its turning away from God and a lurch into immorality, as evidenced by the pursuit of the Lesbian/Gay/ Bisexual/Transgender agenda, than any other factor.

It has always been true that, "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." (Proverbs 14:34), and whether people disagree with this assertion or not makes no difference.

Righteousness is not a high-flown principle that is reserved for intellectual and academic debate but a practical, everyday reality that has to do with the imposition of justice.

The white collar criminals who brought the financial crisis on the world in 2008 went unpunished. Why?

Because righteousness was absent.

The super rich, the multi-millionaires and billionaires, who hire expensive lawyers and financial whiz kids to avoid paying their due taxes go unpunished for tax evasion. Why?

Because righteousness is absent.

Corrupt politicians who know how to create slush funds for their personal use, who divert government work to the companies of their spouses/family members, who receive and launder dirty money are not punished for corruption. Why?

Because righteousness is absent.

Everyone knows that there is one law for the rich and another for the poor and the powers that be fall over themselves to keep it that way. Why?

Because righteousness is absent.

You may not agree with me, and that is perfectly alright, but the solution for these ills are not hard to find and effectually applied.

If something is broken then the suitable thing to do is fix it. If a person is sick then what is essential is healing. Not rhetoric, not fell-good placebos but concrete actions to rectify the real problem.

America needs to return to God in a meaningful way, like the Jews did post Mount Carmel (1 Kings chapter 18), as the Israelites did post-Exile (Ezra 10:1-19), and like the people in Nineveh did in the time of Jonah (Jonah 3:1-10).

Christians everywhere still need to do due diligence, for no matter how arduous it might seem, it remains our duty to intercede on their behalf, to seek God's face for their recovery, in spirit and with confidence: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Enough said.
