Veil over the Eyes of Judah

by Ethel Ashe-Frear
12/09/2014 / Bible Studies

Research writing and properly cross-referencing scripture as it is written in the Bible is important to the accuracy of any Bible study. I've broken this study down to small paragraphs and short sentences, as I personally found the use of many scriptures difficult to follow.

Is it possible to reveal WHY there is a veil covering the "eyes of Judah" in the Old Testament as written in Isaiah 29:10?

I am hopeful the reader will understand the many Bible references I have chosen. Some verses are noted but not fully written out. The Bible scholar will choose to look up each verse for added clarification.

This work is far from complete. Others may have a different view and I am open to suggestions. This particular Bible study is condensed from my original document.

After I completed the research on Part I - "The Prophet Elijah" and Part 2 "People of Israel exiled to Assyria the Northern Kingdom." I felt an additional explanation was necessary regarding the Jewish Nation and why they did not recognize their Messiah.

Using the Old and New Testament scriptures, I cross-referenced the factual coming of 'the prophet' [Elijah] as prophesied in Isaiah 11:11-12 speaks about the regathering of the lost tribes for the [second time] which are the two key words.

I cross-reference to Malachi 4:1-6 where the scriptures talk about Elijah's return. In the book of Revelation 11:3-10, we read about Elijah as the first witness; Enoch is the second witness as mentioned in the first article. See: www.helium.com/items/1898386-elijah-prophet-enoch-israel.

The scriptures tell us in II Corinthians 3:14 - "But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ."

And again we look in Romans 11:8 - "Just as it is written: 'God has given them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, to this very day.'" Cross-referencing to Deuteronomy 29:4 - "Yet the Lord has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day."

The following words from scripture explain the situation of Judah. We read on:

Isaiah 6:9-10 - "And he said, 'Go, and tell this people: Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive. Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; Lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and return and be healed.'"

God is not to blame. As it is written in Matthew 13:13-15 - "Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand."

All these years a veil has covered the eyes of Judah as written in Isaiah 29:10-24.

Isaiah 29:10 - "For the Lord has poured out on you the spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes, namely the prophets; and He has covered your heads, namely, the seers."

Here is what God has to say about the veil over the eyes of the Jews. This verse is very clear. A 'spirit' of a deep sleep came upon them.

What causes one to have spiritual blindness? Maybe our own background of learning, or lack thereof. Could be we are so set in our ways that there is no room for new ideas and growth as written in the scripture?

The Hebrew word is *TARDEMAH - a deep sleep, lethargy or trance. As found in Strong's Concordance using the original King James Version and cross-referenced it with other verses. It is necessary to use the KJV if you are checking the verses.

This same deep sleep is used in Genesis 2:21. "And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept." In 15:12, "And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram."

Again the same deep sleep, Proverbs 19:15 - "Laziness casts one into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger." Also as a point of reference, the same deep sleep can be found in Job 4:13; 33:15 and I Samuel 26:12.

The critical question now, is the Jewish Nation in a "deep sleep" until the appointed time?

The verses in Isaiah tell of a deep sleep over Judah. God has selected a special period in time to lift this deep sleep.

We can cross-reference to I Corinthians 1:19. "For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent."

We are now moving from a deep sleep to a sealed book.

Let's continue looking at verse 11 in Isaiah 29 - "The whole vision has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one who is literate, say, 'Read this, please.' And he says, "I cannot, for it is sealed."

Why is it sealed? The answer is found in verse 14. A spiritual change.

Isaiah 29:12 - "Then the book is delivered to one who is illiterate, saying, 'Read this, please.' And he says, 'I am not literate.'"

I thought to myself, "Why is the Jewish nation not literate?" Possibly a lack of an understanding of the New Testament?

Isaiah 29:13 - "Therefore the Lord said: 'Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but have removed their hearts far from Me, and their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men."

Men who assumed this or that was the meaning of a scripture when in fact that was not what God said at all. I surmised that this could be the answer. The prophet has said, this people draw near with their mouth, but their heart is far away. Cross-reference to Matthew 15:8-9 - "And in vain they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men."

A Coming Spiritual Change.

Isaiah 29:14 - "Therefore, behold, I will AGAIN do a marvelous work among this people, a marvelous work and a wonder; for the wisdom of their wise man shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden."

Note a cross-referencing from this verse to I Corinthians 1:19 it states - "For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent."

In Verse 14 the words are written twice - "A marvelous work and a wonder." What could this marvelous work and wonder be from God?

My opinion is that this can only mean the scripture in the New Testament. The messenger will show a new way of preaching and teaching combined with a new way to live. This has never been done before (in this context).

Israel as a nation has never understood the complete references to the teaching of Messiah Jesus in the New Testament. They will come to understand and learn.

This prophecy has not taken place, yet! Isaiah 29:24 - "These also who erred in spirit will come to understanding, and those who complained will learn doctrine."

We now cross-reference to II Corinthians 3:15-17 "But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

Isaiah 35:5 -10 "Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert."

Jumping to verse 10 - "And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away."

Summary:

It has been proven through scripture and cross-referencing; the mind of Israel has been blinded until the "appointed time" with an explanation given. The veil covering the eyes of Judah is noted as a lack of understanding.

The scripture tells us in Isaiah how this all happened as in a deep sleep. Now, we are given the good news. At an appointed time the veil (deep sleep) will be lifted and the Lord will do "a marvelous work and a wonder," as has never been done before - written in Isaiah 29:14. The Jewish nation will know their Messiah.
