Life Exchange

by Mark Heatherly
7/16/2007 / Poetry

How blessed is the man who has come to the end of himself.

He shall discover a life previously unknown.

What a marvelous thing, the man who no longer counts his life as dear to himself.

For he shall take hold of that which is life indeed.

The man who treasures himself, can he also treasure God?

The man who holds onto himself, can he also lay hold of God?

For where-in lies his treasure, there shall his heart be found.

It is the one who loses his life, even so shall he find it.

At the first a man knows nothing & has nothing but himself.

This self he treasures very much in his own heart.

It is the only way, for it is the only life before him.

How fortunate is the man who finds the better way the greater life without himself.

For he has seen the truth.

This perception comes only once the light exposes the darkness.

Where once he was blind, yet know he can see.

Before he only thought he was alive, yet now he really lives.

Before he wandered & stumbled in darkness & did not know it.

Yet know he sees clearly the path laid before him.

The taste of this better life now brings only bitterness to the old self-life.

Now he sees a better way, a better life.

For no one wishes for the new wine when he has tasted the better.

How blessed is the man who can see & confess.

He himself must decrease to the increase of the greater life.

For one must replace the other.

One cannot see the truth while he still yet holds onto the lie.

One cannot see the new life while he still yet holds onto the old.

One cannot walk in the new way while he yet walks of the old.

There is either the one or else the other.

The two cannot co-exist.

How blessed is the man who has come to the end of himself.

For now he sees that true life is not found within himself but in his God alone.

How odd is the wisdom of God to the foolish man ;

For one must give up all he possesses to gain the more.

He must become a slave to be set free.

He must become a child to be a man.

He must close his eyes to see.

He must become humble if he is to be exalted.

He must die before he may live.

I make my writings available to all, but I would very much like to hear from those who have questions or comments or are built up & enriched & also from those who wish to use my writings for reprint.
