Flesh And Blood Miracle

We read the same versus every Christmas. I am concerned how much understanding we have on their true meaning. Mathew describes for us the birth of the gospel; the birth of Christ who was born of a virgin. He was born of the "Holy Ghost". We all know these facts; that Christ had an earthly mother, but was born of God's Spirit. The importance of these facts must not be forgotten. It is more than just a story of a Baby King having an earthly mother and a Heavenly Father. The gospel began deeply rooted in these facts. Their importance must be told and retold; and not just on Christmas. The subject of Mathew's gospel, and indeed every gospel, is this joyful message of Christ's coming; His "good news" and the "glad tidings" that He brought to all men. Mathew starts telling this gospel right where it began; with Jesus' virgin birth.

Mathew was a "publican"; a Jewish tax collector when Jesus called him to follow Jesus and allow Jesus to make him a "fisher of men". Mathew starts doing what he was called to do: "he goes fishing; for men" by beginning to tell the story of Christ's virgin birth. Where else can one start in sharing the "good news" of Christ? We all are reborn of God's Spirit for this expressed purpose; to go fishing for men. Those who profess Christ and do no "fishing" have much reason to doubt if they were ever given the calling to "go fishing" or given any "bait" to do it. The "bait" is the Holy Spirit. He is the power given to us to be "fishers of men". Without that power given us by God's Spirit, we will not do it. Unless Christ was born of God's Spirit, we have no gospel.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.



Mathew tells us of the manner in which Christ's birth took place "on this wise". The first thing Mathew points out to us is that Mary "was found with child" and that this was done by God's Spirit. It was the power of God that made it happen. This is where the gospel is made "good" to us; by the power of God. Unless God's power be in it, it is no gospel at all. This must not be glossed over or made of lesser importance. Luke gives us his account of what the angel said to Mary: "And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." (Luke 1:35). This "holy thing" that she would conceive would be the "Son of God". Is believing in a "virgin birth" important as a Christian? Some evangelical Christian would say it is not important; that Christ being born of a virgin is irrelevant to the gospel. We must not deny the importance of Christ's virgin birth. It is essential to the gospel and we would have no gospel unless the power of God is behind it all. The birth of the gospel is the virgin birth of Christ; God conceived, God empowered, and God planned.


If God was not Jesus' Father as the bible tells us, then who was His Father. If we do not believe that God is His Father then we deny the bible is true and that begins us on a journey down a slippery slope of asking what can we believe about God's Word. This much I know for sure; salvation in Christ is a work done by the power of God. Unless the power of God conceived His power in our Savior born of a virgin; there is no power unto salvation at all. Without the power of God conceived in Him, we would find no hope in His salvation and would have no hope in His second coming.

10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ. 11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.


The Christmas season is all about finding hope in Christ's virgin birth and giving others this same hope in a Savior who is God and having the power of God to save. We can make the most of this joyful season of giving, by giving people hope in Christ's perfect birth. The picture of Christ's virgin birth is the story of a an eternal and all powerful God fulfilling His plan to redeem His creation, and letting it unfold for His greater glory that all might praise His holy name. In God receiving all glory and all praise for what He has done, His creation reaps the benefit. The coming of Christ by the very power of God was to prepare the hearts of men to receive this risen Savior. When we receive Christ, we are then found "without offence" and "filled with the fruits of righteousness". They are received by us through the person of Jesus Christ. We are made blameless and filled with the righteousness of Him. Without the power of God, we would have no hope in receiving these things that really make the season "bright". The Light of God shined through the darkness. That Light is to shine in us for all to see; in season and out of season. We were given this awesome gift of Christ so that we might "And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation." (Isaiah 25:9). This is the reason why it is a season for rejoicing.


This child, Jesus, would be fully God yet fully man. He was fully God and conceived by God, but was Jesus "fully Man"? Jesus was fully "a man", but there was something all men are born with that Jesus was not born with. It was a sin nature. In this age of liberalism, there is a strong move to remove all the supernatural elements from the gospel; including Christ's virgin birth. This is why believing in a supernatural virgin birth is so important to the gospel message. In America, we have a kind of cultural gospel that is much like going to an all you can eat buffet. As a Christian, we go down the buffet accepting the parts we like and rejecting the parts we don't like.


We live in a society that has adopted the attitude that it doesn't matter what you believe as long as you are sincere and do it with love. Our Churches have largely adopted this worldly attitude. What we believe matters. Believing in the right doctrine, biblical truth, matters. The virgin birth of Christ and many other supernatural events in the bible are rejected by more evangelical Christians than you would ever imagine. The numbers would shock you. There is a systematic plan by Satan to discount the power of God in our gospel message. We must stand strong against those who would remove the power of God from it; and I believe we must start with the virgin birth of Jesus Christ our Savior, and Lord.

It is important for the story of Christ's birth to be told, but if all we tell is that God came to be present with men; we have not told them the most important part of the story. First, the bible is not true if we deny that Jesus was born of a virgin. The bible clearly teaches this. If one denies the historical importance of a true virgin birth done through the power of God's Spirit, then we are able then to deny the historical importance of all the supernatural works of God done in the bible. When we deny God's power, we deny His authority. We also deny His truth. The virgin birth of Christ was a fulfillment of biblical prophecy. All biblical prophecy is proven in its own pages to have been all fulfilled by God.


The virgin birth proves Jesus was who He said He was, and who the bible said He was "The son of God". Simply put, He could not be "the Son of God" unless God is His Father and was conceived by Him. For Christ to be the sinless perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men, He had to be God in the flesh. He was fully "a man", but not born with the sinful nature that plagues all of mankind. In one man, Adam, sin entered into the world. Because of Him, we all are born with a sin nature. We are not sinners because we sin, we are sinners because we were born with a nature to sin. This sin nature must be changed. It must be "reborn" of God's Spirit changing our hearts and minds. It through Christ this rebirth takes place through the same power of God's Spirit that conceived Him in Mary's womb. Christ shared our humanity in having an earthly mother, but He was not born of sin. He was born of God's Spirit. Christ was not half man/half God. He was born fully God and born with a perfect humanity free from sin.


Only by this miracle of God's Loving grace could He be the perfect sacrifice for our sin, the author of our faith, and the finisher of our faith. We can only believe as Christians what the angel told Mary; that in her would be born "the holy Son of God" and that this sinless human being born with the power of God would be the Savior the world was promised; "And thou shalt call His name Jesus; for He shall save His people from their sins". A final note here: Christ will save "His people", not all people, from sin. His people are those God has given Him. They are those that Jesus lifts up a prayer for to His Father asking Him to keep them and make them one with Him as Jesus, and His Father are one (John 17:11). But, that is a subject for another bible study.


May this Christmas find all my readers seeing the glory of God experienced in the virgin birth of Christ. May you know His perfect Love shown us in the miraculous birth of our Savior. May you share it with all you meet truly making their Spirits bright. May Santa bring you many gifts, but may Christ come into your hearts changing you into a new life in Christ Jesus. May you see no lumps of coal and may all your stockings be stuffed with blessings. Merry Christmas to all of you and I love you all though none of you have I ever seen.


Flesh and Blood Miracle


It was a flesh and blood miracle
Nine months our Savior lay in the womb
Growing and maturing in His humanity
The beginning of new human being

Conceived in the womb of an earthly mother
Not by human designBut by God Himself
Born of a virgin through a miraculous birth
A human child born with the Spirit of God

Aborting this child was not ever conceived
Nor should any child be in an ideal world
Conception of a child is a gift from God
It is more than a choiceIt is God's creation

On the night of this flesh and blood miracle
The umbilical cord was cut and His mouth cleared
The miracle child lets out a Heavenly cry
Letting the whole world know it's Savior has come

A human birth is very primitive and extreme
It is attended with much stress and pain
God in His infinite Glory became human
But still retaining His own perfect nature without sin

He is born with ten toes and ten fingers
A perfect child in His humanity and His Godliness
He was then given to His earthly mother
Destined to fulfill His Heavenly Father's plan

His name was to be called Jesus
For He will save us from our sins
He was then laid in a crude manger
Born of humble beginnings from heights of Glory

His star appears boldly in the winter sky
Announcing His birth from the Heavens
It leads shepherds and wealthy princes to Him
They fall and worship Him and give Him gifts

For God who is something made Himself nothing
Taking upon Himself the very nature of a servant
He made Himself into human likeness
Fully human and fully divine was He

Christmas is not about giving gifts
It is not about being with family and friends
It is not about Santa Claus and toys
It is not about trees and decorations

All these things truly do make the season bright
They do bring us happiness and fond memories
But the joy of Christmas is found in only one event
The miracle birth of Jesus who came to save us
