Wounded in Action

by Rochelle Arnold

I believe that it is possible to have dreams and visions inspired by God while sleeping. Sometimes people even have open visions when they are awake. The Bible is full of instances where God spoke to a person through a dream or a vision. Recently, I had a vision while sleeping in which I looked down and somebody slit both of my legs just below the knees with a knife. I instantly reached down to try and stop the bleeding but I sensed it wasn't helping much. I also discerned that my knee was gushing blood where it had been cut. It was life threatening!

As I reflected back on the dream and the symbols within it, I found that knee can mean serving or submission. Knee can also mean stubborn or unyielding. Knives can represent sharp or angry words. These same knives may also represent gossip or accusations. I use Ira Milligan's biblical dream book to interpret symbols in dreams. Bleeding means hurt or wounded naturally, emotionally, or spiritually dying. So I believe the Lord was showing me that I have been wounded during a time of service in my life and I needed to be healed of that. He also warned me that whenever we serve at any capacity we could potentially be wounded.

"The words of a talebearer are as wounds." (Proverbs 18:8)

I think what He means by wounded is just a part of our everyday life experiences such as: battling a sickness or disease, losing a loved one, being unfairly treated or rejected. All of us at one time or another have been wounded. I believe we all react differently depending on the situation. It's okay to grieve or soul search and ask for godly guidance. Sometimes the Lord will give me a glimpse into someone's life or heart. He will impress on me the struggle, the heartache, the rejection or whatever it may be. I believe we all have some wounding in our soul.

I have found that a lot of hurt and wounded people choose to lash out and hurt others because they themselves are hurting. Others will act out in anger, rage, malicious gossip, depression, anxiety or have substance abuse problems. We all have ways of coping with our wounds, whether we overeat, under eat, smoke or drink too much caffeine. I think what the vision was trying to tell me was it is important to heal from our wounds and protect our hearts from further injury. Seek the Lord for true healing.

"He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)

Humble Beginnings

Jesus was born in a humble guest room or stable and there rejection would start in his young life. The thorns that were placed on our Lord's head at the end of his earthly life symbolize the rejection he suffered at the hands of mankind. He was beaten, spat upon and called all kinds of names. He was wounded for our transgressions and by His stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)
These Scriptures remind us that Jesus was wounded for us so we can receive our healing through him. He became a curse for us so that when others gossip about us or try to work witchcraft against us it won't work. Instead, "The Lord sustains the humble but cast the wicked to the ground." (Psalm 147:6) This same chapter goes on to say, "The Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love."

So when we humble ourselves before the Lord he will sustain us. The message I took away from the vision of my knees being cut was to be aware of emotional, spiritual, and of course physical wounding in my own life and ask the Lord to heal those areas. The worst type of wounds come from those who have gone through battles for the freedom of this United States. Some of the wounds are highly visible but many of those wounds are buried deep within the soul and spirit of that person. Soldiers come back from war often times with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but civilians can suffer with this same disorder from trauma as well.

The first step to healing is to recognize the wounds are there and then seek help from someone we can trust. I believe the Lord is trying to impress upon me how important it is to forgive and forget. We must let go of bitterness and rejection. We must live and serve with humility but also address the areas of our lives where we may be wounded. We can hinder our growth and delay our destiny if we do not seek healing for our souls.
