'Missionally-mistaken' for Jesus

by James Webb
1/16/2015 / Devotionals

I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me; and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself up for me. Galatians 2:20 (AMP)

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God suppliesin order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:10-11 (ESV)

According to Wikipedia, "Missional living...describes a missionary lifestyle; adopting the posture, thinking, behaviors, and practices of a missionary in order to engage others with the gospel message". (And, of course, a "missionary" is simply one who undertakes "a mission"especially as it relates to one of a spiritual/religious nature [Merriam-Webster Dictionary].)

When Jesus walked among us in the flesh approximately 2,000 years ago, at the onset of His ministry, He stood in His own hometown synagogue and read these words from Isaiah: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed" (Luke 4:18-19; Jesus being the very fulfillment of these words, no less [v. 21b]). With these words of Jesus' in mind as found in Luke 4, the Bible tells us as well that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Hebrews 13:8), and that He wants nothing more than to live in us just as He lives in the Father (John 17:23). In other words, just as Jesus was in the world then (and even so now through His Spirit), so He desires us to be that very same presence today in our world as well (see 1 John 4:17b; cf. 1 John 2:6b).

Several years ago there was a song, "Mistaken", that was on an album that came out by the Christian artist, Warren Barfield. It is a song that speaks about being "mistaken" for Jesus by others that we come in contact with from day to day. What a beautiful thought, don't you think - being 'mistaken' for Jesus in the lives of others, that is?

As we seek to truly be 'missional' in this life for Jesus, allowing Him to live in and through us through His indwelling Spirit, the One who is "the same yesterday, today, and forever," who proclaimed then about having come to "preach the gospel to the poor" (and therefore, once again, healing the brokenhearted, proclaiming liberty to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and liberty to the oppressed), may we too find ourselves doing the same thing(s) through His indwelling presence and power; and find ourselves as well - along with many others - 'missionally-mistaken' for Jesus.

James has served as a teacher, speaker and local church elder. He has an ongoing desire to encourage others by sharing the truly good news of Jesus Christ with them; ultimately bringing honor and glory to God. He may be personally contacted at: [email protected].
