When Wickedness Goes Unpunished

by Dr. Henderson Ward
1/25/2015 / Christian Living

There is a popular saying in legal circles that goes something like this: Justice delayed is justice denied. Sometimes the guilty, after being tried and condemned by the judicial system, tries everything possible to delay or frustrate the penalty imposed. In some countries the murderer can live as many as 20 to 30 years on death row before the sentence is carried out.

In some cases the bold attempt by the guilty is not to diminish deserving punishment but to avoid it all together.

Rich people, because of their wealth and the strings they can pull, are so accustom to getting no punishment for their wickedness that it makes headlines when one such person goes before the courts; and is punished for his criminality.

In every country the rich and wealthy are above the law except when they blatantly do something that manifestly offends the public.

In some countries white-collar criminality is not even policed, and when even obvious crimes are committed the authorities impose a trivial fine, and often not on the offender but his organisation.

Let us be honest the world is in a mess. Wickedness and lewdness are swamping the world and the signs are that they will continue far into the future.

And all because actions do not seem to go hand in hand with the appropriate consequences.

Why is it that trashy, dumb women can post sex-videos on the internet and men queue at their door wanting to marry them? And decent, proper women with good morals and sound education find it hard to find suitable men?

Truth be told there are many of us, from across all religions, that find modern life almost unbearable with a surfeit of wickedness that has become normal.

The truth is, this is not something new.

We do not know a lot about Lot, the nephew of Abraham. But this much we know from scripture; the overindulgence of wickedness got to him: "And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds.)" (2 Peter 2:7-8)

The truth is that people of faith, Christians who are committed to Jesus Christ, cannot feel at ease in this world. It is not that we regard ourselves as above our fellow citizens, or that they are contemptible in our eyes, but because they live on a broad highway that is at enmity with the values of Jesus Christ and they seem to love it so much.

There was a time when people were brought up properly, in manners, in dress, in behaviour and in making right choices and earning the respect of others.

It was not that long ago when people who did wickedness did so in private, hidden away from the eyes of the world, because they knew there would be consequences; and sometimes the consequences were dire.

There was a time when homosexuals were prosecuted for buggery, sodomy, and a range of other public order breaches and were forced to keep secret their lewdness. Today these same homosexuals and lesbians go public with fanfares and trumpets, glorying in their bizarre lifestyle and blitzing the world with selfie photographs and videos of a celebratory nature.

Why? Because wickedness seem to have no attendant consequences.

There was a time when everybody had a proper dress code except when you were so poor you just could not afford proper clothing.

Today people are rolling in money but their sense of dress has dropped into the sewers. So-called celebrities delight in showing their privates in public, some sick-brained nincompoops even think they are fashionable in showing off underwear with their trousers hanging down by their knees and some wear see-through dresses with no underwear.

Why? Because wickedness and lewdness seem to have no attendant consequences.

There was a time when the penalty for offending public morals was swift and severe, and people did not take liberties in public.

Recently I passed by a bar here in Barbados and I was shocked by the loud, obscene language that was being used, the same language that is becoming common in movies and in all places of entertainment. It is as if foul language and wanton lewdness are acceptable to everyday people and there seems to be no fear of consequences or retribution.

Here is a truism.

Where wickedness reigns the people perish.

It was always thus.

Wickedness is like cancer; it either grows and causes complete destruction or it is dealt with and diminished.

And when humanity does not deal effectively with its festering moral cancers then we should not be surprised if higher powers intervene.

God was enormously patient and longsuffering with the moral cancers of the antediluvian world. But the time came when enough was enough.

The Flood came and made an enormous correction.

God was exceedingly distressed at the behaviour of the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah. Those people exceeded the parameters of God's patience and ignored his warnings.

Fire and brimstone rained down on those two cities and made an enormous correction.

When wickedness goes unpunished by earthly governments and institutions, when power and influence are used to deny justice, when the poor is sacrificed on the altar of the rich and powerful so that they can indulge in their follies, then be aware that God is very capable of making corrections.

"The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good." (Proverbs 15:3)

When the limits of God's patience is reached (and who knows where those limits are) then action may swiftly follow.

"...Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." (Hebrews 10: 30-31)

History has shown us whole cities, and communities, have fallen into the hands of the living God, and the consequences were unimaginable.

History has shown us that Herculaneum fell into the hands of the living God; and how dreadful were their demise.

History records the existence of the city of Pompeii, a city and region that fell into the hands of the living God, and their demise is a byword for withering devastation.

The city of Troy, history has shown us, also fell fall into the hands of the living God and it was totally wiped out.

There are several others that felt the devastated touch of God's retributive providence, and who knows when next divine intervention may occur.

The world is at a place where God is not pleased, and believers are warned not to be attached to this world and not regard it as home. This may be hard for some, but if you are spiritual and your affections are set on things above (Colossians 3:2) then you are prepared for whatever happens and without fear can say:

"Even so, come, Lord Jesus." (Revelation 22:20)

Enough said.
