How To Keep Your Heart Healthy

by Abby Kelly
1/31/2015 / Devotionals

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Proverbs 4:23

You've seen the items lined up on grocery shelves, their green and white labels screaming, "Heart Healthy!" You've probably heard your mom and dad talk about eating and exercising to maintain a healthy heart. But did you know that God talks about caring for your heart, too?

Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

That word, guard, in Hebrew, means exactly what it means in English. God wants us to put barriers around our hearts to keep evil, pride, lust and others sinful things out. It also means to keep secret and be watchful.

How do we do that? Well, the next few verses explain how God wants us to guard our hearts.

Don't use bad language. The Bible tells us in James that the tongue is a very powerful weapon and it can hurt others. It also has the power to bless people. The things we say reveal what is in our hearts, so by guarding our speech we prove that our hearts are clean.
Let your eyes look straight ahead. God calls us to follow Jesus. That means we need to know what the Bible says, learn what Jesus did and imitate Him. To do this, the eyes of our heart need to be focused straight aheadon Jesus.
Think about where you're going. Do not turn to the right or left. This is much like the previous instruction. When our eyes are focused on Christ, we will not see and allow sinful things into our hearts.

As you go about your day today, think about what is in your heart. Pay close attention to the things you say. Are they revealing sin in your heart? If so, you need to confess (tell God you're sorry), repent (change your mind, turn away from evil things) and refocus your eyes on Jesus by reading His Word.

Want a little hint on how to do this? Psalm 119:11 says, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."

Memorize Scripture. When God's Word is in your heart, your heart is well protected.

God, teach me how to guard my heart. I want to be pure like Jesus. Thank you for your Word that teaches me how to live. In Jesus Name, Amen
