Attachment to the good life

by jay supetran

The Philippine economy is dependent on the billion of dollar remittances from overseas Filipinos. Getting out of the country is still the dream of many Filipinos despite statements from political leaders that the economy is improving. A friend of mine whose application to migrate in a first world country was approved expressed that he was also entitled to experience the "good life".

The Bible shared with us the story of Lot, who decided to part ways with his uncle and mentor Abram. He was given options, and he has chosen the "good life" among the cities of the plains. The attraction of the cities and the gradual attachment of Lot and his family were chronicled in Genesis.

In Genesis 13:12, it says, "...while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom." First, he was outside the city which at that time it was already considered wicked. Instead of keeping away, he drifted towards the city and its wicked culture.

In the next chapter, we read he was already living inside the city! His properties were even taken as plunder by a king who attacked Sodom. Genesis 14:12 stated, "They also carried off Abram's nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom." It must have been really attractive for Lot for him to live inside the city instead of just staying at the periphery.

Not contented with just living inside the city, he firmly established himself in it. First part of Genesis 19:1 states, "Two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city." Several events in the Bible showed that people sitting at the gateway are usually the elders, those who witness transactions between individuals. It can be assumed that Lot may have acquired a position of authority in the city, and he actively participated in its affairs.

Lot has fully integrated his life in the city and has developed strong attachment to the place. He may have retained the faith in the God of Abram his mentor, as they became the subject of a rescue attempt. But Lot's and his family's attachment to the "good life" was so great that he has second thoughts of leaving the city despite the message of destruction by the angels. We read in Genesis 19:16, "When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them."

Our present condition may not be pleasant, but it is not an excuse for us to seek out a condition that God has not prepared for us. The good life we may be seeking may end up the hell we abhor, just like Lot who ended up with all his possessions burned, a pillar of salt for a wife and daughters who has lost moral direction. We should always seek God's leading to show us his perfect plan for us.
