Intent on One Purpose

by Jerry Ousley
2/20/2015 / Christian Living

My wife has told me that I have a one track mind. By that she isn't saying that one thing is all I think about but she knows that when I get something in my head to do or accomplish that all my conversation, all my thoughts are on that goal or fixing that problem.

To illustrate, several years ago my computer developed a virus actually computers don't develop viruses but they are downloaded by visiting a website that's infected, or opening an email that contains the thing. While you are viewing the website or reading the email the program is fast at work eating at your files and data. It was the one, if you remember, that everyone was warned about. You were not to get on the internet or open any emails on a certain day. I heeded all those warnings and despite the temptation, refrained from using my computer all that day.

The next morning I returned to my computer thinking all was well. But when I checked my email the machine began acting funny. I thought a restart would fix it. When the computer came up after the restart it looked normal at first but then, and folks I'm not kidding here, a yellow skull and crossbones appeared on my screen and then all went to black. I got the virus anyway and it completely erased everything on my hard drive. Fortunately I had taken to the practice of using the "C" drive for programs only and stored all my personal files on another drive. I had to reload all the programs but my files were safe.

However, the operating system would not load. I tried before going to work that morning but it would get to a certain place then stop. I couldn't figure it out. That's all I could think about that day. After dinner that evening I went to my computer determined to fix the problem. To make a long story short I sat up all night long working on that thing. Each time the results were the same. I kept at it until it was time to get ready for work the next morning.

I couldn't keep my mind on anything except trying to figure out how to solve the problem. During the course of that day I discovered a certain setting in the CMOS programming of all computers. When I got home that evening I went in to the CMOS settings, changed that one little thing and guess what it worked! All that time wasted because of one little setting! But that never happened to me again!

The point is, that was all I could think about. Until I solved the problem I was a man on a mission. That's the way we should be in Christ Jesus. In talking about being a successful Christian one of the things we must do is to be committed to Christ. But what is our purpose? What is our goal? Certainly we should be concerned with leading others to Jesus. But that is still only one aspect of what a good Christian should be doing. We want to go to Heaven to be with our Lord, but again, as wonderful as that will be it is the reward for being a Christian. Ministry, service, meeting the needs of others, and living our lives as an example are all good and necessary things we must do. But still they don't define what our one purpose is.

In Philippians 1:21 Paul said that for him to live is Christ and to die is gain. Of course that means that as long as he lived in this world it was his duty to reflect Christ, to witness of Him, and to win others into the Kingdom. His death would usher in his great reward by going to Christ. He knew this. But the one purpose was what drove him to think in these terms. Our one purpose and intent is to be what God created us to be. We were made to love and worship God. No matter what our hands find to do, regardless how many souls we have won to the Lord, and despite all the hungry people we have helped to feed, we do it all because we want to worship God. That is our aim. It is our focus. All of these other things will be accomplished as we live to worship our Creator. God will lead us to witness. He will put it in our hearts to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and heal the sick, whether by medicine or praying in faith. He will speak to us about loving the brethren. These are all necessary and good. But they come as a result of our intention to fulfill our purpose: To worship God. Make it your number one intent today to fulfill your purpose.
