A Reason To Understand What You Say.

by Olawale Ogunsola
2/26/2015 / Christian Living

Children are ready learners. They can learn anything and easily recite what they are taught. To register anything you want a child to know in his heart, turn it into a song. He will soon sing it to you and his friends everywhere.

However, he may not understand it.

Do you know that adults may also behave in the same manner? You have to be very careful of what you say often so that it will not become too common that you forget its essence or meaning.

Say and practice it always, this is the most profitable thing to do.

Apostle Paul warned you (and me) in Romans 2:21-22 thus,
"You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?
You, who say, 'Do not commit adultery,' do you commit adultery?
You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?" New King James Version.

May the Lord help you (and me) to teach yourself before you teach others. This is most profitable for you.

People have lived for us and we can learn from them. You can read my articles titled "They Lived for us." and "We are living for others at www.faithwriters.com." for more.

One of the people who lived for us was Laban.

Certain words were common to him, and everyone expects him to have a perfect understanding of those words. When Eliezer was led by God of Abraham to take a wife for Isaac, every member of Laban's household patiently listened to his success story. Convinced of the story, Laban and Bethuel, as family spokesmen said,
"The thing comes from the Lord;
we cannot speak to you either bad or good. Here is Rebekah before you; take her and go, let her be your master's son's wife, as the Lord has spoken." Genesis 24:50-51.

Do you think that Laban understood the meaning of "we cannot speak to you either bad or good."? I doubt much!

Do you know the reason? This is it:

At a point in time, Jacob, Rebekah's son came to live with Laban. When the relationship between them grew sour and it was time for Jacob to provide for his own house, without telling his uncle, he fled with all that he had in Laban's house. When the uncle heard, he gave Jacob a hot chase. He pursued him vigorously until he finally caught up with him.

On the eve of the day he met him, the Lord warned him using words he should "understand",
"Be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad." Genesis 31:29.

Please, pay attention to a better way God put it. He did not want him to speak "good" nor "bad" to Jacob. Laban's expression puts "bad" before "good". However, whichever comes first, he should understand those two words.

For reasons best known to Laban, he disobeyed God. He spoke "bad" and "good".
The Bad:
1. He accused Jacob of various wrongs.
2. He boasted against him. He said he could do harm to him if not for God's warnings.
3. He condemned Jacob by accusing him of foolishness.
4. To crown it all, he alleged, "...why did you steal my gods?" A thing Jacob could never do.

The good:
1. He wanted to celebrate Jacob's departure.
2. They ate together.
3. Laban kissed and blessed Jacob's sons before he departed.

Were these in obedience to the commandment of God and his understanding of "do not say 'good' or 'bad'"?

Although the Holy Bible does not record it, Laban must have been punished for this.

Laban was not alone in such a thing. Do you know the meaning and weight of what you say? Do you only tell and teach others but not a doer? That is hypocrisy. No hypocrites will inherit the kingdom of God. Therefore, turn on a new leaf today; understand what you say and act right.

Stay blessed and rapturable; the Lord is coming soon.
