Godly Contentment

My body and my heart may grow weak. God, you give strength to my heart. You are everything I will ever need. Psalm 73:26 (NIRV)

Let's face it, as the old saying goes, (unfortunately) "Nothing last forever"; our youth turns into more of the older, 'seasoned' years; our 'fortunes' come and go (if they truly do come at all to begin with, that is). Our lives in our older years don't necessarily reflect the 'enthusiastic recklessness' (if you will) of our youthful years (which is probably a good thing for many of us). Yes, once again, nothing in this life truly does last forever. And as we get older, the reality of our lives points more and more strongly in the direction of this particular reality.

But in light of this particular reality, notice what the Psalmist states above about what he came to personally understand of what the true 'substance' of it all was - of where the source of his strength could truly be found: "God, you give strength to my heart." (Therefore, of course, as a result of God giving strength, as the Psalmist continues, "You are everything I will ever need.")

The Psalmist understood that, yes, our bodies "grow weak"; even our minds(/"hearts") might grow weak as well. But God gives strength to our hearts! In fact - once again, as the Psalmist points out - God is truly everything we will ever need! (God is truly our "Portion," as the KJV and NKJV translate the word "everything" in Psalm 73:26.) Maybe this is what the apostle Paul understood as well when he wrote the words that he did found in Philippians 4:11-13: I.e., "I have learned to be satisfied with whatever I have. I know what it is to be poor or to have plenty, and I have lived under all kinds of conditions. I know what it means to be full or to be hungry, to have too much or too little. Christ gives me the strength to face anything." (CEV). (In essence, it seems that Paul - like the Psalmist - understood that his true "Portion" in life was God and God alone; more specifically, for Paul, Christ and Christ alone [See Philippians 3:7-8; cf. 1 Corinthians 2:2.].)

Along these lines of finding true, complete contentment in God, I saw a poster posted online not too long that read: "At My Lowest: God is My hope ... At My Weakest: God is My Strength ... At My Saddest: God is My Comforter." "How could someone truly believe this?" someone might ask. How could someone really be convicted that regardless of what he or she might face in this life, God IS truly enough? Because, as the Psalmist learned through his own personal experience(s), as Paul himself found out as well in his own personal experience of weakness (see 2 Corinthians 12:9-10), yes, God is truly enough for all who seek to make Him their "Portion"; that is, to truly make Him their only "inheritance" - not only in this life, but especially in regards of the life to come.

Taste of His goodness; see how wonderful the Eternal truly is. Anyone who puts trust in Him will be blessed and comforted. Psalm 34:8 (The Voice)
