Have We Forgotten?
By: Rick L. King
March 16, 2015

Often times I hear people saying that they desire all things new. They are tired of the old and want something new. Scripture says:

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

In order for "all" things to become new, then "all" the old things have passed away. It cannot be "all" things new unless the old is gone.

We are called to live in the today. We are not called to live in the past. Many of us have experienced many disappointments, hurts, and conflicts with others. Unfortunately we hold on to these and seem to not let go of them. Holding on to them causes us to walk in the past instead of the now. Granted what people may have said or done to us was not right to do. Yet if we got offended or hurt because of them and still hold on to them then they are still getting to us. We are told:

Philippians 3:
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

We must learn to forget those things which are behind if we truly desire to have the new in our lives. First we must forgive the person or persons involved. Secondly when the enemy comes at us and reminds us of the offense we must learn to resist the thought and not give place to it. It will go away if we will determine to not take it on.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Ephesians 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.

If we give place to the thought then we take it on and we are troubled. It is as if there is a wound and every time we dwell on the past hurt or offense we cause the wound to fester.

Hebrews 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Bitterness will come up and trouble us if we do not learn to let the past go. What ever happened, happened. We cannot change the past. We can only learn to react to it in a positive way so as it no longer has any hold over us and effects our walk with the Lord and others. The Lord once told me that bitterness is like a cancer to our spirit. It will eat away at it and bring much death to us. We can know if we have or have not gotten rid of the past by observing what is coming out of our mouths. When a situation or a person is talked about what do we say? Do we re-live the incident or do we pray blessings upon the person? We are told too:

Mathew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Luke 6:28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

Can we pray in love for the person? Can we realize that they are not perfect either and make mistakes? Can we realize that they need God's love and grace just as much as we do? If we can then we have gotten the past behind us. If we still have offense in our heart then we have not let go yet.

Mathew 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

Years ago I had a situation where I was led by the Holy Spirit to support a pastor. The Holy Spirit gave me a word for the pastor that was to help his ministry. He rejected the word. I realized that I did what I was told to do and the Lord would have to talk to him about what he wanted him to know. I knew that the pastor was walking in what he knew so I did not take offense to his reaction to me. Even though I knew this I found that I was hit by the devil for three days to become offended at the pastor. I knew that if I became offended that I could not continue to pray for him out of love. I battled the attack for three days and kept resisting and then it finally left me alone. For whatever reason the enemy wanted me to become offended. This is what is meant by resisting the devil and he will flee. This is what is meant by not giving place to the devil. The devil wants to cause walls between people and get us locked in to something from the past. It keeps us from pressing forward to the prize of the high calling of Christ Jesus. We must learn to forget the past. We must learn to let go of all the offenses and hurts caused by others. Until we do we cannot go to where the Lord wants to take us. We just cannot take yesterday into today. Today is new, yesterday is old. If we truly want the new, then we must forget the old past. Have you forgotten?
