AVID GOLFER NO.3. SPIRITUAL LESSON.

by ROBIN BOSCH

Each golf club in the golf bag is there for a specific purpose. When you hit the ball it will give you distance and loft depending on the situation that you may find yourself on the golf course.

Believe me; the golf course is fraught with obstacles hazards, not to mention adverse weather conditions. The cardinal dynamic of the club is for the golfer to allow the club face do the work. Its loft and angle have been specifically designed to loft the ball.

So depending on the distance or the height you require, choose the right club to achieve your goal. As soon as one tries to force the ball, (self-effort) to get the distance and or loft, the ball will head in the wrong direction; too high, too low and even missed completely (freshy), how embarrasing.

I have stubbornly made this mistake many times. I have said, "You know what? I'm going to absolutely give this shot my all. I am going to really cream it. I am going hit this ball two hundred and fifty meters, just watch me." You know what usually happens? I tense up; I lose all rhythm and tempo and end up hooking, slicing or pulling the ball.

The end result most times is me having to look for my ball in the rough or losing it completely in a water hazard. Why does this happen? I don't trust the angle of the club face do what it is designed to do. I think I know better than the manufacturer of the club. Now here I come along with my ego and know better attitude and end up fluffing the shot. Again I ask the question: Why does this happen? The answer is, I don't adhere to the tried and tested dynamics of playing golf.

SPIRITUAL APPLICATION
The same happens when I try to do things in my own effort and will. I allow my ego to get in the way and think that "I" can do it. Not remembering that the scripture says, 2Cr. 3:5 "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency [is] of God;"

This applies when I'm trying to overcome a sin in my life or a wrong attitude or disposition or simply trying to be a better person.
The scripture say Gal 5:16 "[This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." This means if I try to walk in the energy of the flesh and rely on my flesh to accomplish that which I desire, I will be disappointed. On the other hand, if I walk in the Spirit and rely on the Holy Spirit, He will do effortlessly for me that which I am trying so hard to accomplish.

It's called rest. Hbr. 4:11 "Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief." This is not a passive resting, but a dynamic rest, energized from a Power Source greater than my fleshly capacity and capability. Eph. 3:20" Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,"

Yes! I must have good intention, but have to realize that effective results emanate from the Lord who dwells on the inside of me. When Jesus died on the cross, he not only saved me from going to hell, He also saved me in every area, difficulty and circumstance of my life. I am to tap into the rhythm and tempo of the free flowing Energy of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible calls it divine power, 2Pe 1:3 "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that [pertain] unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:"

This is also called grace. Act 15:11 "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they." Amen.

I have been a believer in Christ for many years. It has only been in the last three or four years that I have received greater insight into the Grace of God. This has injected me with energy to tell others about the blessed "rest" we have in Christ. Grace is not a theology but is a Person-- Jesus.
