A Time for Everything

by Jennifer Champion
4/18/2015 / Christian Living

Every person if they live a life of some length in years will experience the same things. One of the most beautifully written pieces of scripture about life is found in Ecclesiastes Chapter 3.

A Time for Everything

3 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

Pete Seeger, a popular activist and song writer wrote and released a song called "Turn! Turn! Turn!" inspired by this piece of scripture prior to the release of it by the Byrds in 1965. Pete had stated in interviews that he thought the bible to be folklore, a mere poetic history of people. He died in 2014 at the age of 94. He was a staunch democrat; a liberal with powerful views on a plethora of subject. He and his wife were married for 70 years. He seemed a happy guy from what I have read. I can't say that I disagree with everything he stood for because he was after all fighting for good things in his life. I only hope that before he drew his last breath, he had accepted Christ as his savior.

I can read the verses in Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 and it just makes me happy on the inside. I think back in my life about how I was born to a single mom. People had been pushing her to abort me but she refused. Ironically, I had an abortion at seventeen. It took years for me to forgive myself but only a moment for God to forgive me. Looking in reverse is not about regret; it is about remembering how much you loved someone and then they were gone. It is about looking for that one thing in your life and then finding it or finally accepting that it just wasn't meant to be. Looking forward isn't about seeing the bad things in our world as getting worse but seeing them as a prelude to something far greater than any of us can ever imagine. Life is all about change and none of us are immune to the things in this world, good or bad. The most important thing about life is simply this, "He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end."(V.11)

If a person has never read the bible or only thinks the bible is merely a poetic history of man like Seeger, then I encourage them to pick one up today and turn to Ecclesiastes 3. I am sure they cannot deny the truth found in its verses.
