The Best Pick Up Line Ever

by Jennifer Champion

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" (John 4:7)

It was around noon when Jesus approached the well and saw the Samaritan woman there. She was alone and so was He. He could have been snobby for He is the Son of God; He is God. He could have saved his voice and pleasantries for a large crowd. However, He had a purpose and that was to change this sinful woman's life. He wanted to open her eyes so she could see Him. He could have completely ignored her and no one would have thought anything about it because of who they were. Better yet, he could have started their conversation in a different way. He didn't approach her and sound all preachy and self-righteous.

Instead, he asked her a simple question to get the conversation going. He asked her for a drink of water. He was a Jew and her a Samaritan and since they did not associate, this was an opportunity for her true heart to be seen. She could have turned her back on him because he was a Jew but instead she continued in the conversation.

This meeting of theirs could not have taken long yet, it made a huge impact on her life so much that she went into town to tell the other Samaritan's. Their eyes were also opened to the Lord. A short conversation between Christ and this woman had changed a town. It had broken down the barriers.

There are several things we can take from this experience:

1. The time of day to talk to someone about Christ is irrelevant. We should not let our Sunday morning church service be the only time we talk to others about Him.
2. The number of people to share with about Christ is irrelevant and does not denote successful witnessing. We should be willing to tell one or many.
3. The approach to witnessing doesn't have to be a holier-than-though method full of church terms and finger shaking. It is about meeting a person on common ground.
4. The type of people we choose to witness to shouldn't be limited to our own type of people. We should be willing to tell anyone regardless of sex, age, race, or lifestyle about Christ.
5. Witnessing doesn't have to be some long drawn out experience. It could simply be a short conversation with another person about Christ. It is all about being an example of Christ for others to see.
6. Witnessing is effective when it not only makes one person excited about Christ but causes them to go tell others as well.

Pick up lines are used by men oftentimes to pick up woman with the end result being that if exchanged affections. There is no guarantee that their affections towards one another will be forever. Christ approached this woman and asked the best pick up line ever. He simply asked for a drink of water. His question was not to pick her up and exchange affections for a night, he wanted her forever. Shouldn't this be our goal as witnesses, to lead someone to him forever?
