Teenagers and God

by Jennifer Champion

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)

I admire my oldest child because she asks questions about God that are tough. Last night, we were talking about people that are born with both female and male parts, hermaphrodites. She wanted to know how hermaphrodites are supposed to choose what sex they claim because no matter what they choose, they will be homosexual in a sense and homosexuality is a sin. She made a good point. She then reminded me that hermaphrodites are born that way, it was how God created them.

First, I let her know that we are all made in God's image, neither male nor female. We are told this in the very first chapter of the bible. (Genesis 1:27)

Second, I was reminded of 1 Samuel 16:7 that tells us God does not look at us like man does with only physical appearance but He looks at our heart. He knows the person we are on the inside, no matter how we look on the outside.

Third, I reminded her that homosexuality is a sin but even if a person wasn't committing homosexual acts, they would be committing other sins because every one of us is a sinner. (Romans 3:23)

I don't have all the answers but I know this; if a person seeks the Lord, believes in Christ, both his birth and resurrection, and repents of his sins, he will enter heaven. (John 3:16)

These bodies we have right now are just temporary. Our soul however is eternal and it is up to each of us to choose where our soul will spend its eternity. (Matthew 25:26)

My daughter is only seventeen and her questions are the type that each of us as Christians should be listening to and instead of pointing our fingers and making snap judgments, embrace their inquiries with fervency. How we direct our children's questions about God can either draw them near to Him or push them away.
