SHAKY GROUND

by Tesh Njokanma

As far back as Florence could remember, holidays meant beach time for her family. Bar Beach, Badagry Beach, Tarkwa Bay, Alpha Beach, Eko Tourist Beach Resort and many other beaches had been visited by her family. When the family chose to go on vacation outside the country, it had to be a place with a beach resort. They had visited beaches in Togo, Cotonou, Malaysia, West Indies, and America. It was therefore no surprise that her family had chosen to celebrate her dad's seventieth birthday at the Anabella Club Resort in Spain. They had seen pictures of the lush tropical gardens that surround this beach resort and had unanimously agreed that this was the perfect venue for a family reunion to celebrate their dad's seventieth. For Florence and her siblings, the trip to Spain made more sense than having to gather 500 people or more for a party in some hall. This way, less time, energy and complications were involved.

So here they were, Florence, her twin Brother Thomas, Tina her elder sister, Junior her younger brother, their spouses, mom and dad, and a battalion of grandchildren having the time of their life. The waves were friendly, the tide low and Thomas was doing what he knew how to do best SWIMMING. Florence had dozens of pictures of her twin brother on different beaches and was certainly going to have some new shots to add to her collection which she would post on Facebook as soon as she got back. Of course, she had come fully prepared with her camcorder and camera to capture every moment of this beautiful celebration and holiday.

Everything seemed to be going perfectly well. Tina and Junior were as usual arguing about God knows what. She just couldn't understand why those two couldn't see eye to eye. The children were having fun in their colourful, cute beach wear with their uncles chasing them around the place. She took note of her parents chatting and laughing with Dan, her husband.

Suddenly, a huge wave came cascading down carrying Thomas along with it. She noticed it because she had just taken a picture of Thomas displaying his swimming skills. For the first few seconds, Florence and as many as were watching, thought they would see Thomas as soon as the waves calmed. When after ten minutes there was still no trace of Thomas, panic set in. Where could he be, what could have happened? By this time, some beach officials who appeared to be expert divers, had been notified of the incident and where searching frantically for Thomas. By the end of the day, Florence and other members of her family had received the bomb shell. Thomas had drowned.

There are many things in life that we cherish and don't want to ever let go of, then life's shockers strike and we find ourselves separated from the people and things we hold so dearly. It could be as a result of a transfer to another city or town, retirement, a divorce, separation, or a misunderstanding with someone you love, or by death as it happened to Thomas' family.

Few things in life are stable. Friends and family come and go. Situations and circumstances keep changing. Possessions can be lost, stolen or burnt. The faces we see, voices we hear, causes we are busy fighting for today, will one day pass away. No matter how good anything or anyone looks, or the depth of our love for that thing or person, they don't bear the label constant and unchanging. Only God is constant and unchanging. God can never change, fade, or be shaken. Putting your trust in anyone or anything in this life is like standing on shaky ground. Imagine what would have happened to people who had been depending and relying on Thomas to get them a job or start a business, or to those who had borrowed him huge sums of money and were expecting to be paid back in a day or two, or to a patient on some hospital bed who was relying on Thomas to come and donate blood in order to save the patient's life.

There's no guarantee that anything or anyone other than God will be there tomorrow. God is here today, tomorrow and forever more. He was there in the beginning and will always be there. There is no variableness, neither shadow of turning with Him (James 1:17). He can't be involved in any kind of accident. Changing weather conditions can't affect His health. He doesn't suffer bankruptcy, or gets tired and feels like calling it quits. He's just constant. Doesn't it make sense then that we place Him above all others, that we make Him the center of our lives and depend on Him for everything we need and have to do. He's the One we should trust completely and derive maximum fulfillment from knowing and being with. That way, no matter what life brings our way, we will be standing on rock solid, holy ground not on some shaky ground that can easily give way.

Psalm 46:1-5 tells us that when we make God our refuge and strength, though the earth gives way, though the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though the mountains quake with their surging, though you are facing the worst kind of spiritual, marital, family, health, or financial problem, you won't be afraid, you won't fall for your feet are planted on a firm foundation not on some shaky ground that can collapse with everything on it.

The foundation of every building is very important. The foundation holds up and holds together whatever structure is erected on it. The foundation determines the life span of the building. Even the most magnificent building can collapse if it has a faulty foundation.

Build your life on a firm foundation not on any man or woman no matter how kind, loving, rich, or influential the person may be. Build your life on a foundation that assures and guarantees you that even when the rain comes down, the streams rise, and winds of problems blow and beat against you, you won't suffer a great crash (Matthew 7:24-27).

If like Thomas you have to face death today, what would be your story? Get divine cover and security today. Stop standing and building on shaky ground. Make Jesus your firm foundation.
