Reasonable Risks

by Olawale Ogunsola
6/23/2015 / Christian Living

Life is full of risks and everybody is involved in risk taking almost on daily basis. A risk to take depends on the decision of an individual. One may take a risk or not.

For the purpose of this piece, let me classify risks into two:
*Reasonable risks;
**Unreasonable risks.

One is bound to be involved in either of the two. Now let us consider briefly what makes a risk reasonable or not.

One, a risk is reasonable if the Lord is involved. Any venture that is undertaken carrying out God's instructions is reasonable.

For instance, father of faith, Abraham left his comfort zone to follow God's instructions to his advantage and benefits of subsequent generations after him. Genesis 12:1-4.

Two.
When two or more risks are at stake and one must be taken, then one must choose that which has a ray of hope in it. It is a reasonable risk to tow that path which tilts towards life. Out of the two or more risks, to choose one that will save life or lives is wisdom.

For example, in 2 Kings 7, there was a severe famine in Samaria because of a siege laid against it by Syrians.
Four lame men took counsel together to put their lives at a reasonable risk. Two options before them were either they remain in the city to die of hunger or fall into the hands of the enemies, the Syrians who may save their lives to become prisoners of war.

They went to the camp of their enemies.

What was the result? They ended being the answer to Elisha's prophetic declaration that there would be abundance in Samaria within twenty-four hours. On their arrival at the Syrian camp, no man was there.
Thus their lives and those of other Samarians were saved.

Three. One can take a reasonable risk when the glory of God is involved. Every risk that will give glory to God is worth being undertaken. It is a reasonable risk. Three Kingdom addicts, Sadrach and his two friends,Hebrews, refused to bow to the authority of King Nebuchadnezzar but chose to undergo a reasonable risk, a journey into a burning fiery furnace. They were tied and delivered into the furnace.

What was the outcome?

The furious King saw the three men walking in the fire together with the Son of God. They were not hurt. The Lord was glorified. Details are in the book of Daniel chapter three.
It is a reasonable risk for the glory of God because the gentile King declared that only the God of the Hebrews should be worshipped because He alone is the true God in heaven and on the earth.

Four. One can undertake a reasonable risk to save the lives of others to demonstrate our love for them. It is a good and mandatory task to be our brother's keeper. To do this may sometimes involve taking a reasonable risk.

As an instance, Queen Esther in Shushan, the palace did this. The Queen was in the comfort and safety of the palace but her people, the Jews, were to be destroyed by their enemies, Haman.

What was the risk?

According to the law, a Queen who was not invited by the King should not go in to the inner chamber. Death penalty awaited whoever ventured to do so. Now, Esther's people's lives were in danger; she has not been invited by the king for the past one month. Yet, she must intercede for her people before the king.

She took the risk and went to the king after three days fasting and prayer with
"If I perish, I perish!" Esther 4:16.

Did she perish? No!

She secured the king's favor and was granted her request. The tide of destruction was turned against Haman, his ten sons and other enemies of Jews.

Thus, the Jews were saved because Esther took a reasonable risk.
Henceforth, do not hesitate to take a reasonable risk.
Stay blessed and rapturable because the Lord is coming soon.
