What Awaits God's Full-Time Worshippers

by Jerry Ousley

When I was discharged from the Army I couldn't wait to get home. At the time I was driving a little 1977 Chevy Vega (for those who don't know what those were they were very tiny, compact automobiles) which I had bought well used from another soldier on the base for the grand sum of $400.00. I packed that little vehicle from front to back leaving only small spaces so that I could see out the rearview mirrors, and headed home. It was a grueling trip (and I'll save that story for another time) but man, was I glad to get home!

Several things awaited me when I arrived. It was very late at night but Debbie had sat up and the first thing I did was to grab her up in my arms and plant a big, wet juicy kiss on her. At the time our daughter wasn't born and Jeremy was our only child, an energetic three year old, who lay fast asleep on the couch. He had stayed up as long as his little body would allow waiting on Dad to get home. We said our "hello's" the next morning and it was wonderful.

Debbie had organized a welcome party on my behalf so later that evening we headed out where all our family members and friends had gathered. It was great to see all those people. Of course there were a lot of things to do, like find a job and get our home life re-established, but it was good to be home and the rewards were terrific.

In talking about being a full-time worshipper of God there are also things that await those who persevere, pay the price, and follow through to see the outcome. Naturally, and it goes nearly without saying, we have the promise of Heaven. We will receive a brand new life that will go on for eternity as we enter those gates of pearl, meet our loved ones who have traveled there before us, and stand in front of the throne to personally continue our ministry of full-time worship. That will be a glorious experience.

However there are other things that await those full-time worshippers. I want to say right up front that we don't become a full-time worshipper just to experience the benefits but the benefits are consequential to our service. If you get the cart before the horse you won't go anywhere very fast.

First of all we can know a peace that surpasses the knowledge of this age. While the world panics in fear of the things that are even now taking place, cataclysmic disasters, failing financial systems, and governmental corruption world-wide, we can rest assured that our God is going to take care of us. It may not mean that we sit back in a life of luxury as these things take place; we will feel the blows from them too, but it does mean that despite the hardships, we have found a retreat where we can spiritually escape them any time we want too. The Lord will be our fortress in the storm an unshakable rock on which we can depend. All who hide themselves in Him will be safe. Read the words of Psalm 91:9-10: "Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling." What a promise! What a security to grasp and hold tightly!

During these times Jesus Christ will prove to be everything to us our precious Redeemer, our protector, our keeper, and our hope against the storm. He will be there for us even if we find ourselves in the midst of persecution. Even in the moment of death He will be at our side helping us through to our eternal reward.

One day John lifted his eyes toward the sea while in exile on Patmos. A ship was approaching. News came that the Roman Emperor who had sentenced him to abandonment on the island had died. He was now a free man. According to traditional history he sailed away and settled in Ephesus. From there he wrote his three small epistles that have become light to the world. You see, it was after Patmos that he wrote his letters of love. The experience of Patmos, which caused him to become a full-time worshipper, if he hadn't been already, instead of hardening him, had shaped him from a "son of thunder" to the Apostle of love. Our difficulties, our sicknesses, diseases, pain, financial stress, trials and persecutions will only serve to make us more seasoned in the love of God if we hold tightly to Him during our experience, and we will reap that which awaits the full-time servant of God.
