THE TALL, SCARY STRANGER

by linzy bruno
7/15/2015 / Short Stories

Sam felt his spirit abruptly sink for no apparent reason, as he sat looking out the window of the speeding train he was riding on to Montrïal. 'What's wrong with me now,' he wondered. 'Duh....the same thing happened last night.... how annoying I forgot already! I MUST stay in close fellowship with The Holy Spirit! Okay this is what I'll pray from now on when I need my mind renewed: 'Fill me Holy Spirit. Drive me. Teach me. Guide me today!' Then he put his head back and closed his eyes; enraptured in the peace and joy that began filling up his insides, his outsides and every fiber of his being. 'Oh Lord You make life so beautiful,' he thought just before he opened his eyes again. Then he stood up and wandered around with a powerful urge to mingle and a quickly increasing desire to share at least SOME of the remarkable joy he was feeling, when suddenly, he felt a cool shiver run down his back, as a tall, thin man brushed passed him; dressed entirely in black. His long, straggly hair gleamed with grease and his face was weathered with several deep scars. Sam's stomach flopped like a fish on a hook, as he stood stunned by the meanest, ugliest glance he'd ever received from a stranger. The other scary things Sam detected were: loud clanging noises caused by tons of heavy, long chains that were hanging from the man's tattered belt and also on his belt was a frightening looking skull and crossbones buckle.

'Dear Lord, here is a man I believe is in desperate need of Your help! Please g-give me the wo...rds if You in...deed would like to speak to him through me,' Sam prayed; stuttering and stammering, even in his head. He went back to his seat to help relax his quivering limbs. He closed his eyes, took some deep breaths and focused on what God was telling him to do.

To make a long story short; Sam's cooperation with The Holy Spirit DID lead him to speak to the scary stranger. After talking to the man; Sam learned that the man lived a very sad and lonely life. His parents went to prison many years ago; responsible for the scars on his face and NO ONE EVER told him about God.

Sam helped the man by telling him stories about his own experiences with God and led him to accept Jesus as his savior and the scary stranger gave his life to the Lord that very afternoon! Sam smiled; grateful for his understanding of The Holy Spirit's teachings. He learned there are no predetermined speeches necessary, just a willingness to meet people exactly where they are and that THAT'S all he needs to do.

Furthermore, he learned that God will give him the most perfect words to say and let him know whether or not it's appropriate to say anything in the first place. AND later, as the train pulled into the station and they were still saying their fair wells; Sam noticed to his great surprise that the tall, scary stranger wasn't nearly as tall or as scary as he had originally thought......hmmmm..... interesting....
