God And Names Of Places And Events

by Ngozi Nwoke

What effect does a name of a place or an event have on it? Every place or event has a name, which is either carefully or carelessly thought of and given. As a name influences the life and destiny of the bearer, so also a name influences the happenings in a place or an event which bears it. This article explains the need for wise choices of places and events you are involved in.

What effect does a name of a place or an event have on it? Every place or event has a name, which is either carefully or carelessly thought of and given. As a name influences the life and destiny of the bearer, so also a name influences the happenings in a place or an event which bears it.

Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name - Genesis 2:19 (NKJV)

A name effectively describes a place or an event. It gives a good picture of what to expect from it; it is its name. And like a name on a person, the higher the frequency of its use the greater the effect on the place or event. And God respects and honours whatever name given to it.

God has given man the power and authority to fill and subdue the earth - Genesis 1:28. How you use this power determines what you get. Whatever Adam called each living creature was its name - Genesis 2:19. Whatever you call a place or event is its name.

The name will inevitably directly or indirectly affect people involved with it. Those living or working in a place will be affected by its name and those attending an event will be affected by its name. So, where do you live or work and what events do you attend?

BETHEL

This means house of God and was named by Jacob. The scriptures recorded that indeed people were having encounters with God there. In Genesis 12:7, God appeared to Abraham and promised to give him and his descendants the land where he was, and Abraham built an altar there.

When Jacob (Abraham's grandson) appeared on that land, God visited him and told him that He would give the land on which he laid to him and his descendants - Genesis 28:13. When Jacob woke up, he declared the place house of God and called it Bethel - Genesis 28:17-18. The name was then transferred to the city which was previously called Luz - Genesis 28:19

When Jacob left Laban and got to Canaan, God asked him to return to Bethel where He originally met with him, and there God reaffirmed His promise to give him and his descendants the land - Genesis 35:1-15

Furthermore, Bethel was the first place where the ark of the covenant of God was set up, and where the priests carried out the sacrifices and inquired of God - Judges 20:18, 26-28

FEAST OF PASSOVER

This is an event named and instituted by God - Exodus 12:1-28. God called it Passover because He was going to pass through the land of Egypt that night and would strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast, and execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt.

They were to put the blood of the lambs on their houses, so that when He sees the blood He would pass over them; and the plague would not be on them to destroy them when He strikes the land of Egypt. God commanded them to keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout their generations - Exodus 12:12-14.

SHILOH

The tabernacle of the congregation was set up in Shiloh under the government of Joshua - Joshua 18:1. It was the place where the children of Israel gathered, all the time the house of God was there. It was there too that God revealed Himself to Samuel by the word of the Lord - 1 Samuel 3:21

Shiloh means "Tranquility", which means calmness; peacefulness; quiet; serenity. No wonder, the city called Shiloh was chosen to be the place to accommodate the tabernacle of the congregation, the house of God. God dwells in a peaceful and quiet environment.

HOUSE OF PRAYER

In Isaiah 56:7, God said His house shall be called house of prayer, a place where He would make His people joyful, and offerings and sacrifices would be accepted on His altar. So it is that in the house of God till today prayers, offerings and sacrifices are offered unto God.

And so, when Jesus entered the temple and saw people buying and selling instead, He was greatly grieved. He had to drive the people away and overturn the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves - Matthew 21:12-13

SODOM

Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names renders Sodom's name as "Flaming, and by NOBSE Study Bible Name List as "Burnt". BDB Theological Dictionary suggests relations with the name "Siddim", which may have to do with word "demon" (Abarim-publications.com)

These words flaming, burnt, demon clearly describe what happened in and to Sodom. A place associated with a name "demon' has no choice but to harbour demons and their activities. This can explain how Sodom got into extreme level of immorality and wickedness. And then, for their sins, they were burnt down - Genesis 19:1-28

Lot, who was living within Sodom, would have been destroyed too if not that God remembered Abraham and saved him when He overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt - Genesis 19:1, 29

Therefore, the name of a place or an event determines what happens there and what God does in it. This calls for wisdom on your part. You should, as much as depends on you, keep away from places and events that will affect you negatively and maximize places and events that will help you fulfil your destiny and succeed in life. And when it is a Christian event, go with great expectation and faith because surely its name must speak, and your expectation shall not be cut off - Proverbs 23:18
