POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER IS NO RESPECTOR OF PERSONS

by Linda Wattley
9/20/2015 / Family

Ever since I was a child, I always wondered why people were so unhappy. I watched my family and other families experience so much unhappiness and emotional pain often. I remember when I finally saw my father cry. His mother died of cancer. He was never the same nor was our family. When my grandmother was alive, the Fields family was strongly bonded together and supported each other through thick and then. Grandmother's death meant the end of family support. No one was the same, I mean no one.

As quiet as it is kept, we all suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Once grandma was buried, we had to go on as though she never existed. We just didn't talk about it. Granddaddy seems to have taken it the hardest heart attack after heart attack until he eventually died. Her children who were my generation's parents ended up practically without parents. Our parents were zombies on the road to self-destruction. You see back then African Americans did not seek counselling. They just acted like not anything happened.

When my grandma died, no one asked me how I felt. No one embraced me and told me everything is going to be alright. And no one told me what I was feeling was normal which was abandonment. My grandma was the only person in my life that ever seemed happy to see me. She was gone and there was not anything I could do about it. I still had to eat my lunch and go to school.

Linda Diane Wattley is a published writer who began her first work of art with poetry. The poem, "I Wish" appeared in the Poetry Gem of the American Poets Society. For over twelve years she had her own religious/philosophical column in the Frost Illustrated Newspaper titled "The Best Will Show Themselves". In her weekly column, Wattley shared a unique voice revealing her understanding of the heart of God. Heading into her thirteenth year of writing, she realized God had imparted a message to her to share with the world. This message was founded on love and God's desire for His people to know Him individually and wholeheartedly. Knowing the power of words, she writes for readers to experience instant spiritual transformation.
