Murder on the Coast

by Beth Dickinson
10/19/2015 / Short Stories

It was just like any other morning. We arose and got dressed and went out into the kitchen to have our Breakfast. I thought that the weather looked glorious; so lovely and sunny, so I decided to have a look outside. I opened the sliding door that led out onto our patio but my enthusiasm about the weather and what we might do today disappeared in an instant. I stopped suddenly and stared in unbelief at what I saw in front of me.

It was a scene that was becoming all too familiar in this, otherwise, idyllic part of the world in which we had decided to come and live in our retirement.

These were the signs of something rather sinister that had happened on our patio the previous night. There was quite a lot of clear liquid splashed around on the floor. "Was this just water or some other stronger fermented drink?" I wondered. I gazed around and saw red stains on the ground along with sand and grass everywhere. Had someone spilt some red wine on our patio?
Then, to my horror, I saw the same sort of red stains along the bottom of our outside wall. I gasped and hoped that my suspicions weren't true. They looked very much like blood stains to me. By this time, my heart was racing.

"What terrible things had occurred here overnight?" I composed myself and edged very slowly out of the door to inspect the area more closely. I nearly slipped over a bit of what I thought was a piece of food and remember thinking to myself, "We didn't eat our tea out on the patio last night." Then . Shock! There were more 'bits' lying around and, something that looked like hair as well.

After a closer look, I realised that these were body parts; a truly gruesome sight. A murder had been committed here! I felt sick and was frightened, and wondered if the killer could still be around somewhere. "What sort of neighbourhood are we living in?" This was just so horrific and all too much for me to bear.

I composed myself and crept a little further onto the lawn. There were some rustling sounds coming from the direction of one of our bushes. I was terrified and couldn't call out to my husband for fear of drawing attention to myself. I shut my eyes and took a deep breath. Suddenly I felt something touch my leg. Startled, I looked down to find my adorable, soft, gentle natured Tabby cat at my feet. Butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. BUT A LARGE RODENT CERTAINLY WOULD!!
