Boundless

by Nicholas Lewis
12/15/2015 / Devotionals

I had just finished watching the new Oscar nominee movie, The Theory of Everything, the story of the famed scientist and atheist Stephen Hawking. It was a most touching movie yet dreadfully sad to watch. Stephen Hawking after practically proving the Big Bang and thus the beginning of the universe (obviously pointing to a supernatural creator) he eventually decides to prove the theory wrong and aspire to show the world that the universe itself is eternal and without end or beginning. He says in the end how humanity and the universe is without boundaries. It is up to us to expand, explore, and discover, pushing the horizons. In that last moment of watching the movie I realized how Hawking must have felt with the idea of God. Maybe overpowering, restrictive, controlling, bounded. As I pondered his last speech I remembered a verse in the Bible, one that I hope Stephen Hawking will get to read sometime because it relates to his hope for a boundless eternal universe. It is his answer to the theory of everything.

Psalm 119:96 "To all perfection I see a limit; but your commands are boundless."

Your commands are boundless What may seem like a restriction is actually the key to boundless freedomThis sounds like a paradox, but in it is a timeless (literally) and beautiful truth. For Stephen Hawking the idea of a beginning and the idea of a creator seemed to restrictive, yet he never realized that that was the key itself. Without a God and without a beginning how could humanity have ever existed or continue on living boundlessly in the boundless command of God? So maybe this sounds a little confusing, but I will clarify the point. I was reading Anthony Hoekema's book, Created in God's Image when I found a startling passage that correlated with Psalm 119:96.

"Freedom and law are usually thought of as opposites Actually, however, even in the natural world there is no freedom without limitations. A fish has freedom to swim, but only as long as it stays in the water. A violinist is free to produce luscious string tones and glittering cadenzas only if he or she knows how to do proper fingering and bowing. Only after the rules of voice production have been mastered is a singer free to inspire audiences. All good music is a kind of marriage in which loyalty to the laws of composition is joined to freedom of expression. We speak of the benefits of a "free society", but a community that would have freedom without limitations (such as civil laws, criminal laws, traffic laws, and the like) would breed anarchy. In the redemptive world it is also true that there is no freedom without limitations. True freedom, in fact, consists in the joyful keeping of God's law."

This is a summary of how God's commands are boundless. In fact Stephen Hawking would not even be a genius if it were not for the laws of physics otherwise there would be no formulas or laws to discover and theorize about! Nature would not even be in a solid or constant state because no laws would govern it! The mountains, rivers, our bodies, flora, and fauna would all be chaotic without the laws of nature! Engineers couldn't push the limits without the limitations of mathematics and architecture! Medical Scientist wouldn't be able to push the limits in medicine and health care without the limitations of chemistry and human anatomy. As Christians we wouldn't be able to discover the full potential of being human without following God's commands.

In today's society Christianity seems to get a bad rap because of "rules' or the "ten commandments". People, especially youth feel burdened down by rules, regulations, restrictions, and limitations, but this is a lie. How could we possibly live freely without rules? Try doing it (then try it without the laws of nature) and you'll find yourself more limited and restricted than you've ever been! Trying inventing a new machine without the laws of nature. It doesn't quite work so well. Try being the best possible version of yourself without following the law and a form of ethics. It doesn't quite work either. So why do we make God's law out to be so bad?! We want to make the rules, but how can we? We wouldn't even know where to begin and if we did we would be using God's laws of reason, logic, and physiology to do so. Furthermore how is it that we are saved in the first place? Jesus Christ fulfilled the law by living a sinless life and thus breaking the boundary of death!

Because we are sinners by failing to follow the law of God which brings life in the first place (as explained above), Jesus Christ (Son of God) came down to fulfill the law and thus make life boundless for all, giving eternal life! Stephen Hawking didn't realize that Christ brings boundless/eternal life. By following the law, Jesus brought unlimited life to those who accept Him as their Lord (crediting His righteousness to our account). Stephen Hawking wanted an eternal universe, but he doesn't realize that God himself is the boundless one. To the ideal perfections of man there is a limit, but God's infinite wisdom transposed to commands is boundless and its implications are boundless upon boundless, eternal and everlasting.
