Let God Increase

by Vanessa Grossett
1/04/2016 / Christian Living

Often times we pray for God to increase our finances, health, careers, or relationships. Now I am not saying there is anything wrong with this. In fact if you have a need to increase in these areas, it is right that you ask God with the right motives. James 4:3 says, 'You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.'

However, how often do we say Lord increase in my life so that I may decrease? If we are honest, it is very rare that we hear or say this statement, 'Lord may you increase, and I decrease,' why? Because allowing the Lord to increase in our lives means letting go of our self will, and desires. In this modern day of Christianity, we can get so caught up in me, myself, and I that we forget our lives is not our own, it belongs to God. This means we need to surrender our self will and desires, if we allow the Lord to increase in our lives. Now this doesn't mean that we forget about them. I believe in time God will give His children their heart desires, but we must humble ourselves under Him, and allow Him to order our steps. 1 Peter 5:6, 'Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.'

We should not get caught up with status, wealth, or people pleasing; rather we should get caught up with the Kingdom of God and pleasing Him. Whether it's a new year or not, with every year people experience ups and downs. I am not saying this to put a damper on anything, but lets be honest, we are living in a world that is controlled by the god of this world, due to man's disobedience and sin, so not everything will be rosy, this is why it is important that we Christians seek God deeper, which allows us to develop a closer relationship with Him.

How many of us can honestly say that we have communicated with God on a deeper level, or have meditated on the Bible on a daily basis? If we're honest with ourselves sometimes this doesn't happen. We can get so caught up with the busyness of life or doing things for others, that our relationship with God can be dwindling; yet we want Him to increase us materialistically. I don't know about you, but this doesn't seem even to me.

I know no one is perfect, and I am not saying we should be holier than thou. What we need to do is discipline ourselves to let go of our own self will, and to grow deeper in the Lord, allowing Him to increase, so our fleshy desires will decrease.

My prayer is, 'Lord may you increase in my life, may you be the centre of everything, and may I decrease, as my life belongs to you.' Brethren I hope this is your prayer too for every year and every season.

'But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.' Matthew 6:33.
