Text: Colossians 3:16

God's Word, the Bible, is the Bread of Life. It is so important that we need to live on its every word (Matt. 4:4). His Word gives direction (Ps 119:105), correction (2 Tim. 3:16), wisdom (Prov. 2:6), courage (Joshua 1: 67) and strength (Job 4:4). Above all, it is the source of Life eternal life (John 6:68). The Word brings us so many benefits that we are short-changing ourselves when we deny our souls of this rich food. The Word (and not music) is indeed food for the soul. How much more so in these difficult times when many things weigh on the souls of men leading to depression, suicidal thoughts, sorrow, confusion and disillusionment. In turbulent waters, there can be nothing more comforting than having a strong anchor to steady your ship. When the waves of economic recession, family disputes, marriage crises, relationship breakdown, health failure, work pressures, racial discrimination. . . come crashing down on your ship, you had better have a strong anchor to keep you from going under. The Word of God is just that the anchor for the soul.

There are many books to turn to but, as the apostle Peter observed, where can we turn to for Life but the Lord Himself by looking into His Word. Most other books will give some kind of benefit or the other to the soul but only God's Word brings eternal benefit to the one who feeds on it. In the course of our daily lives, we have to study books in our various fields of knowledge; we read newspaper articles, magazines and other publications; we may even have authored a few of our own. We live in the information age and so we must read or become obsolete. We must read or risk failing exams. If we do not read we cannot lead effectively. Yet, read as we must, we should allow everything we read to be filtered, as it were, through the lens of the Word. Why? Because not only is the Word the Absolute truth, it is the only book that transcends all of time and eternity. Heaven and earth will pass away but God's Word will remain forever (Matt. 24:35).

What are you reading? You might be looking for great knowledge, timeless truth or a perfect standard; maybe you desire to learn about history or to know the future; are you searching for hope or for answers to life's questions? Perhaps you are even seeking Life itself. Look no further than the Word of God. You'll find everything you need in no other book.

Thank you, Father, for giving us precious words of life, hope and wisdom in your eternal Word. Teach me to dig deeper into it and daily uncover new treasures that will transform my life forever. Amen.
