Are You Going Where You Really Want to Go?

by Jerry Ousley
3/18/2016 / Christian Living

A man, whom we shall call Gary, cut his finger at work one day. Anyone who has ever worked in a factory knows that the first thing that has to be done is to fill out an accident report. That serves two purposes: (1) If the injury gets worse it will help in being approved for disability income if you have to take time off work because of the injury and (2) It keeps the company out of trouble with OSHEA. The cut didn't seem very bad and although he felt somewhat ashamed for giving so much attention to this cut, he wanted to do things right so he went to the personnel office to fill out the form. Once done, they instructed him to go to first aid to make sure the cut didn't get infected. Again he felt like all of this was overkill for a cut that if he had received at home, wouldn't have gotten a second glance.

But he wanted to do things right so he walked down the corridor to the first aid office. Once there he was confronted with two doors; one was labeled "Accidents" and one was labeled "Sickness." This was definitely an accident so he went through that door. Now inside the room behind the door labeled "Accidents" he was once again confronted with two doors; one labeled "Cuts," and the other labeled "Punctures." This was only a cut so he went through that door. Once inside he was yet again faced with two doors; one labeled "Minor Cuts," and the other labeled "Deep Cuts." Again, his was a minor cut so he went through that door which led him right back out into the factory where the first aid kit hung on the wall. Gary looked inside, got the cut cream and smeared some on his finger then put a band-aid over it.

Now back at his workstation his foreman asked if he had gotten help. Gary looked a bit confused as he glanced down at the band-aid wrapped finger and said, "Not really; but man they sure are well organized."

He was back to where he really wanted to go, although it was an hour later. One of the things we must do if we really want to be successful in life is to ask ourselves, "Are we going where we really want to go?" Many have wished they had asked themselves this question when in high school. How much difference it may have made in the lives of a countless number if instead of just graduating and taking a job they had asked themselves this question and then made preparation to do what they really wanted to do.

But to genuinely be successful in life we must do one thing more. Most folks who have made it in what they really enjoy doing believe that they have been successful in life. Perhaps a person has spent their lives working at exactly what they wanted to work at, have bought and paid for a nice home and a couple of dependable automobiles; they've sent their children through college and have managed to put away a nice retirement nest egg. They think that they have been successful and by the world's standards they have. I don't really know anyone who wouldn't like to be in that position. However, there is one more thing that must be accomplished before a person can really mark their life as a success, and that's to add to their list of accomplishments knowing Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior (and they should place this one on the top of that list). If we never accomplish any of the other goals in life except this one then we can know that regardless of where we find ourselves today, we have been successful.

Last week we asked the question, "Are we satisfied with who we are?" Put that together with today's question, "Are we going where we really want to go?" and you have the beginnings of a recipe for success, but only if being who we want to be involves putting Christ first in our lives and where we want to go is ultimately home to Heaven to be with Him forever. All of the other things we mark as success will fall under this and will be only a by-product of the main goal of knowing and serving Jesus Christ.
