The Lord's Day

by Leonard Granger
4/06/2016 / Christian Living

The last day of the week, the only day having a name(Sabbath), is considered a day of rest without any exceptions in the Old Testament. We read in the Bible, Gen 2:3, " And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. So we see our almighty God, who created the heaven and the earth, chose to rest, not for his sake but for ours.

The Hebrew nation, God's chosen people, began having a day of rest honoring God as we read in Exodus 23:12, " Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest; that thine ox and thine ass may rest; and the son of the handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed," It is again repeated in Exodus 34:21, " Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest, in earing time and in harvest time thou shalt rest." Then the Ten Commandments declares for everyone in Exodus Chapter 20. " Remember the Sabbath day and to keep it holy--- The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God; in it thou shalt not do any work."

However in the New Testament, our gracious and loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was sent by his Father God to save the world. After Jesus died, was buried, and rose again on the third day, the early church assembled on the first day of the week in celebration of the victory of resurrection. History tells us in the first century, many Christians, both Jew and Gentile "God Fearers" continued to attend synagogues on the Sabbath and then attend Christian worship on Sunday.

We see where the Roman week was ten days long at the time and Sunday did not always fall on the Roman weekend, so Christian services were held before sunrise. In 90's AD, the rabbis excommunicated the Christians and made them uncomfortable to attend synagogues. Then we find as Christianity became dominant and Christians outnumbers the Jews, Sunday the day our Lord rose from the tomb, was dedicated to worship. However, Saturday is the Sabbath and Sunday is the Lord's Day, because Jesus rested in the tomb on the Sabbath and rose on Sunday. Thereafter, the day of Christian worship has always been Sunday, the day Jesus rose from the grave, and we as Christians celebrate the Lord's Day with singing and praying together in a church worship service.

As a young child, I can still recall my father telling our family, " If you do something, other than the Lord's work on the Lord's Day, you better figure on having to do it over again." I have found that is so true, the Lord's Day is for worshipping and honoring our Lord Jesus Christ in church that day and for us to put our work aside and enjoy the peaceful rest found in serving the Lord.

Trust we will all be in the church of our choice this Sunday as we worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
