The Question of Job

by Jerry Ousley
4/22/2016 / Christian Living

Life is full of questions. Of course that's an old adage that sometimes may seem meaningless but is it really? We have questions about where we are going in life. We question why we are even here. We question the simplest of things like, "What will I wear today," or "What is my schedule today?" Some who are well-off may question, "What car will I drive today?" (Don't you wish you had that kind of problem?). One of my big questions is, "What am I going to have for supper tonight?"

Questions form a test. In school, whether it is elementary school, high school, college, or just a refresher course one might be taking, the most common way to find out if we have learned the material is to ask questions. Those questions may not take the form of a question. It could be a fill in the blank, a multiple choice or an essay answer. It could be a hands-on demonstration. But it is still essentially the same; a question to discover if we know what we have been taught.

Our existence could be viewed as one big test when looking at it in this light. When it comes to humankind, we answer these questions in different ways. Our answers are not always correct. We tend to answer in the way we think individually.

One of those questions was asked a few thousand years ago by a man named Job. He had been a very wealthy man and in the end he became even wealthier than he had been before. But he had questions like all of us. He got his answers the hard way. His test came when God allowed the devil to take away all that he had, including his health. After losing all his livestock, crops and children, he woke up one morning covered from head to foot with boils. The picture we are given of this once wealthy, pampered individual is a broken man, sitting in an ash pile with dirty, ragged clothing scratching himself with a piece of broken pottery.

To make matters worse, his supposedly best friends gathered around him and instead of comforting him, began to tell him that his predicament had been caused by sin in his life. A good part of this book of the Bible is made up of those discussions between his accusers and his answers back to them. In Chapter 14:5-14 we read of one of those posing questions. In verse 14 Job asks, "If a man dies, shall he live again?" That's a very good question don't you think? It's one that a lot of us would like to have answered.

We've made many attempts to answer it too. Some simply answer with "No." They don't believe that there's anything in store for us once this life is over. We have no hope of another existence so just live life to the fullest and live as long as we can.

Others of us firmly believe what is taught in the Bible regarding an after-life. I'm one of them. I fully believe and have confidence in knowing that once this life is finished, if I have made preparation by coming to God through the grace of Jesus Christ extended to man at Calvary, that I can live again. It isn't a life like we now experience because we will be a spiritual creature then. Yet we will go on with our Lord and God.

"How can you believe that?" someone may ask. In our modern era of technology, discovery, and knowledge, how can we believe something as simple as living again after death? It comes only by faith. It comes by having confidence that what we have been told in the scripture is really true and we choose to stand firm on that. All of our questions may not be answered and certainly there will be many that remain when that day comes. But we can believe that we will live again.

Remember that during the day of Job the Bible hadn't been written yet. He didn't have the scriptures to rely on. He only had traditional teachings that had been passed down and what little personal revelation God may have granted them. We have more than that, much more. But the one thing we can do is exactly what Job did when he asked that question. He went on to say, "All the days of my hard service I will wait, till my change comes."
