If He Didn't Go

by Jerry Ousley

Jesus told a story about two brothers. Their father had asked them to work in his field one day. The first son said, "No problem, Dad; I'll be there You can count on me!" while the other responded with, "Dad, I'm way too busy to work in your field today. I wish you hadn't asked me! I'm sorry but I can't do it." As the day progressed we are told that the son who had agreed to work in the field never showed up, but the son who had made such a fuss about not working began feeling guilty and he did show up and worked all day. Children are like that. The ones you think you can count on wind up letting you down while the one whom you may have thought would turn out no good or would be a lazy good for nothing bum would be the one who did the responsible thing.

Perhaps we've been there ourselves. Someone asked us to do something that we really didn't want to do. We may have even fussed about it asking if not out loud certainly in our minds, "Why did they ask me?" All day long you fumed and steamed about it until finally the time came to make that visit or complete the task asked of you. Because you are a responsible person you did what had been asked of you and later you were glad you did.

I know how that feels because I've never made a secret of the fact that I'm not good at visiting in hospitals. I know folks in there are looking for company and are glad to get it. But in situations like that I'm just not a good conversationalist. That's one of the reasons I like Debbie to come along with me, because she is a good conversationalist. I've gone to the hospital to make a visit kicking and screaming inside because I just didn't feel comfortable with the situation. But folks, after the visit is over I'm always glad I went and I feel guilty because I didn't want too.

I'm really glad Jesus chose to return to His Father. John 16:7-11 tells us all about it. It says, "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, he will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged." Think of all the repercussions if He hadn't gone! But He did go! He went to His Father in Heaven and did just as He promised. He sent the comforter; the helper, the Holy Spirit back to be with us. I can't tell you how often I have relied on the Holy Spirit to get me through something and that ranges from knowing how to fix something in my work to knowing what to write about for this column. Without Him I'd never get through it.

He did go and thank God He did! We'd be in a world of hurt had He changed His mind and not returned to His Father. Had He not gone the world would not have been convicted of sin. Can you imagine what it would be like by now if it wasn't for those in this world who have been convicted of sin? It would be one wicked place to live and it is now but at least we have some who have compassion, kindness, want to do the right thing and are good moral, responsible people.

Had He not gone the world wouldn't have been convicted of self-righteousness. Again, what an awful place this would be if no one admitted their wrong doing. What if everyone justified their actions and got away with it? You think we've got psychos now

And, had Jesus not returned to the Father the devil wouldn't be judged. He would still be free to run rampant right over all of us working his wickedness. The world would be a terrible place indeed had Jesus not gone. But He did go and because of it the day is coming when we can go with Him.
