Religious Protests

by Jerry Ousley

"I protest!" We protest a lot of things. If something doesn't meet our approval then we protest. The word "protest" simply means that we are formally making known that we don't agree with something. Sometimes our children protest our disciplinary methods. Often we protest the way something has been handled where we work, or where we go to school. There isn't anything wrong with protesting as long as it doesn't lead to violence that will cause harm to someone else.

We went out to eat one time with another couple. It was a good reputable restaurant but one known more for its breakfast selection than for its lunch or dinner menu. Of course it was dinner time and I really didn't want breakfast that day (although they have wonderful pancakes). I was in the mood for something very tasty (as I usually am) and ordered a steak. There are two dishes I'd consider my favorite: seafood or steak. The only way it could be any better is to combine them and get seafood and steak.

I had my mouth all set for a delicious steak and when they brought it out I took one look at the size of that thing and thought I had died and gone to Heaven! It was huge! You'd have thought I had struck gold. But one or two bites revealed that it didn't taste like any steak I'd ever eaten before. I thought it was ruined so I sent it back. They returned with a whole new steak just as large as the first had been. I cut into it and thought that it was rather tough and when I tasted it I had the same reaction as before. Either their entire inventory of steak was ruined or they just didn't know how to cook steak! I protested to our guests and my wife (little good it did), but I reluctantly paid for the meal realizing that I was really paying for an education; I had learned that this place didn't know how to cook steak!

We are spending some time discussing some hard subjects. We live in the greatest nation on the face of this earth. I want to say that I love this country and what our founding fathers intended when they set it up. I have served in the US Army even though it was during peace time. However, had my services been needed I would have fulfilled my duty and obligation. I am a patriot. Whenever our National Anthem is played I stand at attention and place my hand over my heart and I mean it. There have been times I have been in this position with teary eyes thinking of all those who have given their lives because of their own patriotic feelings, and I salute them.

But there are many things wrong with this country as well. I'm not going to mount a political platform because that's not what the Lord has put on my heart. But I realize like most Americans and especially those Americans who are also Christians, that our nation is quickly being taken over by those who don't really appreciate what we have and I'm not talking about other races here because there are many from all four races who share the likes and dislikes.

I admire a group of people from the community in which I live. A pornographic store opened its doors a few years ago. They had located right beside the Interstate so as to attract traffic. A group of people representing several churches and denominations organized to protest against this place. They stood the test of time. For several years they were there 24/7. They never gave up and guess what - a judge finally ruled that it were to be closed down. I admire those folks.

But generally protesting can lead to other reactions. I'm not condemning those who choose to formally protest against things that we as Christians know to be wrong. But I am saying that what we accomplish is getting our way and making others mad. I think we should do what God lays on our hearts. But the best way to change things is to spend our time winning souls to Christ. If we can convert a drug addict then there is one less demand for drugs. If we can convert one young mother and keep her from having an abortion then we have stopped one more loss of a young innocent life. If we convert those caught up in sin then we have stopped them from committing sin. When the demand for these things is gone then they will close up shop and move elsewhere.

That's the best way to protest. Think about it. Often protesting leaves those who really need to be saved feeling angry and hating Christians instead of seeing love, compassion and justice. Instead of making Christianity have a taste like a bad steak we actually have won a victory for the Kingdom of God. I'm not saying that we just let others run rough-shod over us, but I am saying that we need to consider our priorities first. Our best protest is to stand firm for the Lord, our beliefs, and show Christ to the world. That's the way it was done in the first Church and look how it took off!
