THE LAW & OUR NEED FOR GRACE

by ROBIN BOSCH
7/15/2016 / Devotionals

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."(Matt 5:17-19)

The Law of Moses is indeed true and good and perfect. It is the yardstick or benchmark that God has set, showing the extreme holy requirements that He expects from man.

That's the point of the "Old Covenant" verses the "New Covenant." Man has 'never ever' been able to keep all the law. "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. (Ja 2:10)"

And therefore,"........it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one."(Rom 3:10)

If man was able to keep all the law as is required by God, it would not have been necessary for Christ to have come down to this earth to die on the Cross. It would have been pointless.

So yes, the law stands and it's standards are extreme. But Christ fulfilled the law completely and perfectly so that all who believe in Him, may be made righteous "in Him." Simply put, made righteous under His umbrella.

That is what Grace is all about.

We don't teach people to ignore the law, but we do teach people to accept Christ, who fulfilled the law. Meaning He never broke one jot or tittle of any part of it.

Jot:
"the English form of the Greek iota , i.e., the smallest letter of the Greek alphabet. The Hebrew is yod , or y formed like a comma. It is used metaphorically to express the minutest thing."

Tittle:
"a point, the minute point or stroke added to some letters of the Hebrew alphabet to distinguish them from others which they resemble; hence, the very least point."
(See Matt 5:18 above)

We therefore don't have to keep the law. We could not, even if we strained every spiritual and physical muscle to the extreme. Christ being fully God and fully man, was the only one who ever fulfilled the laws extreme standards.

Jesus cried out on the Cross, "It Is Finished"
Meaning the righteous requirements of the law were fulfilled "in Him."

So the bottom line is, the law which is true, good and perfect causes us to realize our need for Jesus who has fulfilled it completely.
"For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes."
(Rom 10:4HCSB)

That's why we need Jesus -
That's why we need Grace -
That's why His Grace is called the Good News.
Amen.

I have been a believer in Christ for many years. It has only been in the last three or four years that I have received greater insight into the Grace of God. This has injected me with energy to tell others about the blessed "rest" we have in Christ. Grace is not a theology but is a Person-- Jesus.
