Blessings and Birthrights

by
8/16/2007 / Christian Living

For every birthright there is a corresponding blessing.

However, it is not he that owns the birthright in all cases who enjoys the blessings attached to it.

Examine the case of Esau and Jacob.

In Genesis, when Esau came in from the field hungry and asked Jacob for food, he (Jacob) said on the condition that he sold him his birthright.
Genesis 25-31-34:

And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

And Jacob said, Sell to me this day thy birth-right.

And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birth-right bring to me?

And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he swore to him: and he sold his birth-right to Jacob.

Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he ate and drank, and rose and went his way: thus Esau despised his birth-right.

From the preceding passage it is obvious that Esau did not know the importance of his birthright. The bible says he despised or looked down on it.
It is clear Jacob must have been plotting to acquire the birthright for long. He knew the possessor of the birthright would be entitled to inherit the wealth of Isaac, their father.

Please close your eyes and take this prayer point.

Anyone eying my birthright in order to claim my blessing die and release it, in the name of Jesus.

I shall not lose my birthright and my blessings in the name of Jesus.

It was later, when Jacob further took a step to deny Esau of his blessings, that the latter realized the extent of the mistake he made earlier!

In Genesis 27:35-37 the bible records:

And he said, Thy brother came with subtlety, and hath taken away thy blessing.
And he said, is he not rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me twice: he took away my birth-right; and behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me.

Now let us look at what Esau lost as a result of his folly. Verse 37 states:
37) And Isaac answered and said to Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now to thee, my son?

The birthright Esau sold to Jacob would see the owner being a ruler /Lord and having prosperity and blessing.

Beyond this, the birthright package included inheritance of Gods promise to Abraham.

Another analogy of Birthright and blessing is seen in the case of Abraham.
God promised Abraham that he would give him a son who would be his heir.

Genesis 15:2-4
And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?
And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and lo, one born in my house is my heir.
And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, This shall not be thy heir; but he that shall come forth out of thy own bowels shall be thy heir.

As we were later made to understand, while speaking here God had Isaac in mind. The bible says that the Lord calls things that are not as though they are, thus at this point the Lord spoke Isaac into existence.

Hebrews 11:3
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Thus, from a spiritual perspective Isaac was Abrahams first born. He was spiritually conceived by God in the bowels of Abraham before anyone else.

Food for thought: Issac, not Ishmael was Abrahams first born. God spoke him into existence before Ishmael came to be.

But Satan had different plans.

Satan knew the principle of Blessings and Birthright. He knew that, the birthright belonged to first born, who as far as God was concerned was Issac, but he wanted to hijack the blessing attached to it. To do this he gave Sarah an idea she never had in their many years of marriage:

Genesis 16:3
And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

Satan must have overheard Gods promise to Abraham.

He also realized that attached to Isaacs birthright there was a blessing.

Imagine, until then, no one conceived the idea of Abraham having a child. But as soon as God made his purpose concerning the yet to be born Isaac Satan moved.

He came up with a satanic alternative.

Please pray this prayer point:
Every satanic alternative in my life die by fire in the name of Jesus.

Even Abraham at a point accepted the argument that Ishmael was the owner of the birthright and thus the blessings. When God spoke about Isaac again in Genesis 17 Abraham was concerned with God blessing Ishmael.

Genesis 17: 15-18.
And God said to Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.
And I will bless her, and give thee a son also by her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall proceed from her.
Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born to him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear?
And Abraham said to God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!
God was talking about Isaac, Abraham was talking about Ishmael.

Abraham was yet to see the Isaac that God was talking about.
But this did not change Gods mind. Although He agreed to bless Ishmael He did not create any doubt over who the covenant promise the birthright -was meant for. Genesis 17:19-22 states:

Genesis 17:19-22
And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to thee at this set time in the next year.

In fact though God agreed to bless Ishmael, He did not even recognize him in the scheme of things; rather, He referred to Isaac as Abrahams only son.
In Genesis 22:2 the bible states:

Genesis 22:2
And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Issac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
Today, the descendants of Ishmael are contending for the blessing- the promised land- with the children of Israel.

They both believe they have the birthright to the land.

Please, before proceeding further take this prayer point.
Everyone contending for my birthright and blessing die and release it in the name of Jesus.

A similar scenario is seen among the children of Jacob (Israel).

Reuben was the firstborn of Israel, but because of an error on his part his birthright was transferred.

In the book of 1 Chronicles 5:1 we read:
Now the sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel, (for he was the first-born; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his birth-right was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birth-right.

The bible says that genealogy of Reuben was not reckoned after the birthright.

Not only was his genealogy cut off. He lost the blessings that he should have inherited. This is seen in the Chronicles:
1Chronicles 5:2
For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the birth-right was Joseph's:)

Judah inherited the blessings of genealogy. It was from his lineage that David and our Lord Jesus emerged.

But the birthright was transferred to the second to last born- Joseph.

This means what was meant for Reuben was shared among his brethren.

From what we have examined we can conclude:
That a persons birthright is a spiritual entity that is linked with certain blessings. Also, this birthright( alongside the attached blessings) can be transferred, sold, stolen, lost through error or hijacked.

Strange woman/men are programmed into marriages by the devil in order to hijack the blessing attached to particular homes. He also does the same through the introduction of strange children into families (children from illicit affairs.)

Firstborns and those from polygamous families, (or a family where children are produced out of wedlock) need to pray very well.

Your blessing is your birthright; do not allow Satan to steal it!
Please take the concluding prayer points:
Every satanic design to hijack my blessing through stealing my birthright you shall not prosper, die by fire.
My birthright and blessing shall not be transferred to another.
Any sin I have committed that has made me lose my birthright and the blessing attached to it oh lord forgive me and restore what I have lost.

Postscript: Repent and Believe, remember hell is real, heaven is real. No matter how long we spend here on earth it cannot be compared to the time we shall spend in eternity. Hebrews 12:14 states: Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
