Waiting for Jesus

"Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem." Luke 2: 36-38 NKJV

Anna is such a beautiful name. You probably know someone who is named Anna it may even be your name. But did you know that the name Anna has been around a long, long, time and it means "favor" or "grace"? There was even a lady named Anna in the bible!

Anna was the daughter of Phanuel and from the tribe or family of Asher. When she was young, she married a man. But, unfortunately, he died after seven years of marriage making Anna a widow. I am sure Anna was sad and missed her husband but instead of letting grief take over she devoted her life to God.

Anna was a prophetess. Prophetesses were women in the early church which exercised the prophetic gift. To prophesy means to proclaim a divine message, in Anna's case she told others about the coming Savior.

Because Anna was Jewish, she had been told as a child that God was going to send His son to be the Savior of the World. Anna believed God and looked forward to seeing baby Jesus. So she prayed, fasted, and waited for the arrival of Jesus.

And then it happened, God sent His son, Jesus. When the baby was ready, Mary and Joseph brought Him to the temple to be named. And it was there that Anna first saw the baby Jesus, God's son, Savior of the world, the one she had been waiting to see all her life. Although others doubted that the baby was God's promised son, Anna knew the moment she laid eyes on the baby that He was indeed God's son.

Anna thanked God for sending His son and allowing her to live long enough to see the baby. Then she told everyone that would listen about Jesus. What an impact this tiny baby had on Anna's life, she had spent years praying, serving, and fasting just waiting for the opportunity to see God's son and now she saw God's promise fulfilled, up close and personal!
We can learn a lot from Anna; she continued to believe in God's promise regardless of the length of time she had to wait, and she continued to serve the God despite her age. God has told us in His word that Jesus will return, we need to be like Anna and continue to believe, pray and serve Him while waiting for Jesus' arrival whether we are young or old.

Dear Lord, thank you for women like Anna, who serve You their entire lives. Give us the wisdom to learn from them and their Godly examples.. In Jesus' name, Amen
