Traveling to an Unknown Land

But Ruth said: "Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God. Ruth 1:16

I love to travel and see God's beautiful world. I have been blessed to travel to other countries a few times, and one of my favorite countries to visit is Mexico. While on vacation to Cozumel, Mexico with my husband, two daughters, and a friend we rented a bright green VW convertible to drive around the island. One night the five of us loaded up in the VW in search of one of the local restaurants for dinner. My husband and I had eaten there on a previous trip and knew that the food was good. So off we head toward the restaurant. Only it was not on the corner we remembered it to be, so we stopped and asked directions. The problem was we did not speak Spanish, and the man did not speak English, he did, however, understand the name of the restaurant and pointed in that direction. We made the block and still did not see the building. So we went around the block again this time yelling out the name of the restaurant to a policeman who also pointed. We made the block again, several times. At this point, the locals were pointing to us and laughing, and we were also roaring with laughter. Finally, a taxi driver motioned for us to follow him and there in the middle of the block we had been circling was the destination for which we had been searching.

Traveling to other countries can be a little scary. Each country has their own language, customs, currency, and religions that may be drastically different from the ones you are familiar. When I think about going to another country, I think about Ruth. She was a young woman who had been born and raised in the country of Moab. It was there that she met and married her husband, Mahlon who had fled from a famine in his homeland years before with his parents and brother. It was also the place that her husband had died, and she was left a widow with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law whose husbands had also died.

Then one day, Naomi her mother-in-law received word that the famine was over in her country, and she decided to return. Naomi told both her daughters-in-law to go back to their mothers. Her sister in-law did just, that however, because of her love for her mother-in-law Ruth refused. She was willing to leave her family, her country, her customs, and her religion so that she may go to Bethlehem, Judah and live the rest of her life with Naomi.

And that is just what she did Ruth left her homeland and traveled with Naomi to Bethlehem. And it was there that God richly blessed her. Ruth met a man named Boaz who became her second husband, and they were blessed with a family. Not only were they the great-grandparents of Kind David but Christ is also a descendant of Ruth and Boaz.

Ruth's decision to travel to a foreign land was not an easy one to make. Ruth left her family, homeland, and all she was familiar with because of her love for Naomi. Missionaries can identify with Ruth they often have to leave their families and homelands as well. But because of their love for Christ they too, just like Ruth, go willingly. And just like Ruth God richly blesses them.

Dear Lord, I thank You for Godly people who are willing to leave all that they know to travel to foreign lands to do Your will. I ask that You watch over and protect the missionaries around the world. In Jesus's name, Amen.
