Prophets of Self-indulgence

by Ken Barnes
9/01/2016 / Christian Living

Suppose a prophet full of lies would say to you, "I'll preach to you the joys of wine and alcohol!" That's just the kind of prophet you would like!
(Micah 2:11 NLT)

Beware of a preacher who only tells you only what you want to hear. Micah gives us some insight to a people who only wanted to listen to what made them feel good. When people who only tickle our ears instruct us, it is a sure path to apostasy.

First, Micah is not just commenting the ills of excessive use of strong drink; it's far more than this message. Matthew Henry explains that Micah was talking about "teachers who recommend self-indulgence by their doctrine or example." The prophet told the people that they only hired preachers who told them that they could have whatever they wanted from God. The problem with commenting on the "bless me" gospel is that it is so close to the truth. God does want to bless his people. It takes money and lots of it to preach the Gospel and fulfill the Great Commission. God wants to bless his people with the resources to complete the task that he has placed before them. The crux of the matter is why we are seeking the blessing. It should never be just to spend it on just our pleasures. In Genesis 12: 1-3, Abraham, the father of the nations, was told that he was going to be blessed to be a blessing, which is the biblical pattern for the God's provision.

God is not a cosmic Santa Claus. God wants to bless his people to make them salt and light not just to possess silver and gold. Who are you listening to today? Are they prophets of self-indulgence?
