To Serve Jesus

by Duncan Atkinson
9/09/2016 / Christian Living

In the classic Twilight Zone episode, 'To Serve Man', aliens arrive on our planetostensibly, to grant mankind unparalleled peace and prosperity through their advanced technology. These aliens are so benevolent, they even have a book entitled 'To Serve Man'....SPOILER ALERT!....it's a cookbook.

It can be relatively easy to devote ourselves to serving Jesus, storing up years of effort and good works of all kinds. Seeking a kind of assurance that can be nothing but imperfect. The one thing needful, however, may be to 'serve up' Jesus as spiritual food; to feed on him in our hearts, through faith, and intimately receive into our core all that he freely gives us. That is, simply, himself. His righteousness, his love, his word, his wisdom, his lifeboth dead for our sins, and living in our deeds (Phil 2:13, 1 Cor 2:16, Rom 5:5, John 17:26, Jem 15:16).

There are others (perhaps not only 'others') who look only to be served by God. Perpetually consuming His material blessingseven His spiritual blessings, or enough of them to stay comfortable. But one who 'serves up' Jesus and receives him is also served to the Lord in the cookbook sense. They are a living sacrifice, consumed for the glory and the will of God in every part of their lives. This is the faithful, reasonable response to the knowledge of Jesus' mercy (Rom 12:1). This is the nature of the Lamb of God, that God bids us be made righteous by receiving (Phil 2:5). And this is life, for the one who finds his life will lose it, while the one who loses it will find it (Matt 15:25,).

Could any giving be more absolute and visceral than the giving of Jesus' flesh for us to eat? Can you imagine each bread-scrap of Communion as a tiny, living human body, the body of Christ? It is outrageous, but our sins that nail Jesus to the cross are outrageous. Unless we eat the flesh of the Son of Man, we have no life in us (John 6:53). To believe in Jesus is to seek Jesus, to seek Jesus is to find and receive Jesus, to receive Jesus is to know him, to love him, to believe in him, and to live forever (Matt 7:7, John 17:3).
