Introducing Me to Me - Part 2

by Jerry Ousley
9/16/2016 / Christian Living

Have you ever met someone that rubbed you the wrong way? Something about them just didn't make a good first impression on you. They may have seemed rude and over-confident, or put on a false meek, humble attitude. There could have been a lot of things you didn't like about them. Well, I've got some hard news for you; for the large majority of us that is what it is like to really meet yourself. Most of us would not like what we saw. We don't realize the bad habits and catch phrases we pick up over the years that we think nothing of when we are talking to others but if someone talked to us that way we'd be offended.

Don't you just love looking into the mirror each morning? Maybe some of you really do like what you see, but when I take a look in there I nearly jump back in horror. I mean, what did my wife ever see in me that caused her to marry me? I sure don't think that I would have married me. After a moment of looking at all of my imperfections I take a glance down and realize that it's time once again to push back a little from the dinner table because I can't see my feet. Maybe that's not such a bad thing as long as we don't go to the extreme. A fellow told me one time that you can know that a person is on the level when the bubble's in the middle. (Take a moment and think about that one It's a joke you know).

I look at myself again and realize that my hair is rapidly changing color, turning from a dark brown to shades of gray and white. I encourage myself by saying, "Well, at least most of it is still there." My face is changing shape and getting droopier. I have hair growing where I don't want it and no hair where I wish I had it. I'm telling you that it's a job that takes about forty-five minutes every morning just to look presentably ugly! If I ventured out before taking that time to get myself ready for the day I'm afraid the villagers would be after me with picks and axes like they were for the Frankenstein monster!

In order to keep that from happening I have to take that look in the mirror each and every morning. I have to face the horror of myself so that I know what I've got to do about it to be presentable. Then I can't just stand there thinking about what I've got to do but I've got to jump in and do it.

This is exactly what we all need to do each and every day with ourselves. We've got to introduce me to me every day. When we do then we can at least begin to know what we've got to do to improve our lives in the Lord, not just for ourselves, but for our relationship with others as well. How can we be a good witness for Christ if we don't rid ourselves of those things that are not like Christ?

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 11:31, "For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged." The idea is that if we examine ourselves each day and go to work on what needs improvement then we won't have to worry about being examined by God. Of course God does examine us and by way of the Holy Spirit in our lives, He suggests what we need to work on the most. But if we don't take the time to listen to the Holy Spirit within us by looking in that spiritual mirror we may miss those things our Lord wants to improve in us.

Does He do this just to make us fit for Heaven? It is good that we begin to ready ourselves. Of course, we've always taught that when we come to the Lord our spirits are made perfect immediately and on the spot. But our physical man is a whole nother topic. It takes time to bring our physical life up to an even plane with our spiritual life. That's why God invented the spiritual mirror; so we can see one thing at a time that we need to fix. As we take action on those things and make the necessary changes and repairs, it's not quite as horrible of an experience the next morning when we take that gaze into the mirror.
