Another Gospel

by Greg Robbins
10/15/2016 / Bible Studies

There are many scriptures that are hard to understand. They aren't looked at or taught about very frequently. I like to look at them and to understand them. It does no good to ignore them or to pretend that they don't exist. The fact is that they DO exist and are written in the Bible.

2 Corinthians 11:4 "For if he that comes preaches another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if you received another spirit, which you have not received, or another gospel, which you have not accepted, you might well bear with him."

This verse has helped me a lot to understand things. Another Jesus? Do you mean there are more than one? Yes. Paul definitely said here there is more than one Jesus. I think about the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormon Jesus. He is a Jesus who is not God. Their Jesus is a false Jesus. The Catholic Jesus that has the heart showing and is still nailed to the cross, that is also a false Jesus. There are many, many more.

There is a very real danger of creating our own Jesus. If we preach a Jesus who says different words than the Jesus of the Bible, then we have created a false Jesus. Today, the popular Jesus says that you can be saved without obeying his teaching and commands. This is a false Jesus. The real Jesus of the Bible clearly said that obedience to his commands is necessary for salvation. So, many people worship and follow a false Jesus. They have created an idol and they call him Jesus.

There are likewise different gospels. The Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormon gospel is obviously a false gospel. There are many more false gospels as well.

Galatians 1:6-9 "I marvel that you are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that you have received, let him be accursed."

Paul was so adamant about his followers obeying his gospel, that he issued curses to those who preached a different gospel than his own. It is to be kept in mind that the book of Galatians is teaching against the Jewish Christians that came from Jerusalem and taught circumcision. These were the disciples of the twelve apostles in Jerusalem. They still taught that the Jewish Christians circumcise their children and keep the law of Moses. Paul was saying that if any of these Jewish Christians came to Galatia and preached that Gentile Christians need to be circumcised and to keep the law of Moses, they are to be accursed. Paul was issuing curses to fellow Christians because their doctrine was different than his.

Galatians 2:6-8 "But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it makes no matter to me: God accepts no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me: but contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; (For he that wrought effectively in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)"

Paul says that the church leadership in Jerusalem added nothing to him. He apparently was unteachable and unreceptive to what they had to say. With all the teaching today about being submitted to authority, it seems very odd to me that Paul would have this attitude to the authority of the twelve apostles.

Paul said clearly that he was entrusted the gospel to the uncircumcision, or Gentiles. And Peter was entrusted the gospel of the circumcision. Paul said there were TWO GOSPELS. So the gospel that Paul taught was a DIFFERENT gospel than the gospel taught by the twelve apostles. This sounds rather scary to me.

I know of only one gospel that I believe in. There is only one gospel that I trust with my eternal salvation. That is every single word, from verse one to the end; of The Gospel According to Saint Matthew, The Gospel According to Saint Mark, The Gospel According to Saint Luke, and The Gospel According to Saint John.

The Gentiles first received the gospel at the mouth of the Apostle Peter. It was the gospel that Jesus Christ had taught him. Paul's new gospel had not yet been written. And yet the Gentiles got saved hearing the gospel that Peter preached! See Acts 10:1-48 and Acts 11:1-21 . All of the people saved from the day of Pentecost until Paul started preaching his gospel, were 100% saved by hearing the gospel preached and taught by Peter and the other apostles.

So my question is, Why is there a need for another gospel? The original gospel produced the greatest revival in history, with the greatest number of signs, wonders, and miracles. Think about that.
