The Addiction

by Steve Countryman
10/15/2016 / Christian Living

Everyone knows something about addictions. Either first hand or through a friend, a relative or an acquaintance. Addictions can be related to alcohol, drugs, sex, cigarettes, food, gambling or porn. Anything can qualify if it meets the criteria. Addiction: compulsive physiological need for and use as habit-forming characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal.

The word addiction carries with it the connotation of being bad and or harmful. An addict usually struggles with their addiction daily. It is always on their mind. Getting their mind wrapped around their next experience/"hit" consumes them. "Is it available?" "How can I get my hands on it?" "Is there a substitute for it?" "Where can I find more?" "I have to have it!" "I'll die if I don't get it!"

The addiction that I would like to mention is quite the opposite. Instead of being life destroying it is life giving. Instead of causing you to retreat from living it adds to your life. Instead of becoming selfish and self-centered you become very loving and giving. It is an addiction that ALL Christians should have. I call it The Addiction to the Holy Spirit!

Being addicted to the Holy Spirit is the best addiction one can have. The more time you spend with the Holy Spirit daily the more time you want to spend with Him. You find your days are off and that something is missing when you don't make time for the Holy Spirit. When you do your days seem to go better. Not that you won't have any problems but those that come along are more manageable!

It is a very ENJOYABLE addiction! You will find that your prayers are easier to express. That instead of just spending time in prayer and the Word in the mornings you find yourself praying on and off ALL day long. The addiction is not only to the Holy Spirit but to the relationship that develops along the Way! A closeness deepens while revelation and wisdom saturate your thoughts.

Time spent reading the Word is no longer tedious or confusing but the words seem to jump out at you. Scriptures and passages that you once read as just a story now carry more meaning and grab your attention! You find yourself thinking and dwelling on their meaning all day long.

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to show yourself approved by God, a workman who need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Psalm 55:22 Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken. Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Cares and those things that used to worry you don't consume your thoughts as they once did. You know that your heavenly Father cares and watches over you. Things that used to bother you or "go bump in the night" you don't think twice about! For your addiction is now a deep close relationship with your creator. What more do you need?
