Blessed Is This Person

by Greg Robbins
10/18/2016 / Bible Studies

Psalm 1:1-3 "Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law does he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper."

In God's estimation, the person who is blessed is the one who doesn't live in sin, and who produces the fruit of righteous living. The result of this will bring physical and material blessings.

To walk not in the counsel of the ungodly requires cutting off close friendships with worldly people. It also requires not being in business relationships where close communion is necessary with ungodly people. Higher education is the counsel of the ungodly. How many young Christian men and women have been lost by attending colleges and universities? The present day military is very ungodly. I have seen young men join up, on fire for God, and then come out spiritual wrecks. My own brother entered the Air Force with a strong Christian testimony. The now retired career officer doesn't want to hear about "That God bunk."

The counsel of the ungodly is allowed into Christian homes via television and the internet. Every direction that we turn today, the counsel of the ungodly assaults us. "What does it profit to gain the whole world and lose your own soul? What will you give in exchange for your soul?" These words of Jesus Christ are very relevant today. Jesus calling his disciples to leave their homes, families, possessions, friends, and familiar surroundings, is the only certain way to get separate and free from this world system. Courage is required to do it.

You can think of your home as your own castle. Be highly protective of what you allow inside. I only recently got home internet for the very first time. I am appalled by some of the things that are available on it. I honestly had no idea of the depravity that is there. So now I understand far better how it is necessary to exercise willpower and caution while using the internet. It can either be a great blessing or a great curse.

Our text says to not stand in the way of sinners. There is a progression of walking, standing, and then sitting. No one starts out in life on skid row. It is a progression of bad choices that a person makes. Each day we are confronted with a lot of choices. Our present condition in life is the sum total of all the choices we have ever made. This is why the judgement that Jesus promises is just and right. We will be judged according to our works. These works are all the result of choices that WE OURSELVES have made. No one else made those choices for us. So good or bad we will get our just and right due when this life is over. Sobering thoughts like this are healthy and beneficial for holy living.

"But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law does he meditate day and night." This cuts to the quick. Light shone on the truth is very beneficial for us. What we think about is what we DELIGHT in. No one can force or control our thoughts. We are free to think what we want to. And the truth be told, what you think about everyday is what you have CHOSEN to think. It is what you WANT to think. It is what you TAKE DELIGHT in thinking.

The person who chooses to live separate from this ungodly and wicked world, will receive the blessings written in verse three. I hope that each of us will take heed to the admonition of this Psalm, and that we will wisely choose to live our lives based upon this wisdom.
