Jesus - The Baptizer

by Jerry Ousley
11/04/2016 / Christian Living

When congregations perform baptisms these days more often than not it takes place in a baptistery inside the climate controlled comfort of the church building. I'm certain that there are a few who still do it the old fashioned way, going to a creek, river, pond or lake but not as much as it used to be done.

As a child I remember that there was a group of teenagers who had responded to an altar call giving their lives to Jesus one Sunday night. They immediately wanted to be baptized. Our pastor, wanting to be a good pastor, responded to their request only it was extremely cold outside. Of course there was no baptistery so it meant a trip to the lake in frigid conditions. Folks I'm not kidding; it was so cold that while the men of the church took turns chopping a hole in the ice there was a car parked out on the lake where two men were ice fishing. The ice was so thick it took nearly an hour to chop out an area large enough to put them under. But they did it and all survived.

While I was assistant pastor for another church early in my pastoral career we ran into another situation. It was after service one Sunday and several people had requested to be baptized. Normally we took the whole group out, and each one waited while I assisted the pastor in putting them under. Again it was in the middle of the winter. We didn't have to chop ice but I can tell you this: We baptized thirteen people in seventeen degree weather. Because of the cold instead of taking the entire group out at once we took them out individually, one at a time. This event took place before Deb and I were married and I still lived at home with my parents. I was so cold by the time we finished and got home that my father had to help me undress! But as far as I know, no one got sick. I suppose the Good Lord winked at our ignorance and blessed us despite ourselves!

Jesus is the baptizer, but not in water. We don't read where He baptized a single individual in water. However, He is the baptizer in the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist recognized this because he said in Matthew 3:11, "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." However, He baptized no one in the Holy Spirit until after He ascended to the Father. This was simply because that He was still with us.

He is:

The Helper John 14:16 says, "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever -"

Our Teacher John 14:26 says, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."

The Spirit of Truth John 15:26 says, "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me."

The Power from on High Luke 24:49 says, "Behold I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."

Come Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit,
I need You,
Oh, Come sweet Spirit
I pray!
Come in Your strength and Your power,
Come in Your own gentle way!

It's Beginning to Rain

It's beginning to rain,
Hear the voice of the Father,
He's saying that whosoever will
Come and drink from the water!
He's promised to pour His Spirit out
On His sons and His daughters,
So if you're thirsty and dry,
Look up to the sky!
It's beginning to rain!
