The Answers God Gives

by Julie Arduini

When I started dating my husband, I learned I had polycystic ovarian syndrome, PCOS. For me it was a very painful condition that once married, led to infertility. Recently I gave a presentation to a women's group regarding intercessory prayer and I told this story.

My doctor encouraged me to go after God with my desire to conceive. He suggested I share my prayer with children, which I did. One night after months of being nearly bed ridden aside from work, I laid flat out and sobbed with intensity that I know now was deep prayer. I surrendered my fertility, to the point of saying God, if this means a hysterectomy, I'll do it, but I know Your plan doesn't include me being laid up like this. The next day I met with a surgeon who suggested a surgery that would not end my chances to conceive, but enhance them. I have been pain free since April 1997 and our son was conceived seven months later.

Sometimes God says yes.

A couple years later I felt God promise us a daughter and He gave us 1 Samuel 1:27 to believe Him for as we prayed. I felt He was promising us a daughter, right down to what her name would be. When I became pregnant, I was certain this was the promised daughter. I miscarried a few weeks later, New Year's Eve day, in church, during worship.

Sometimes God says no.

Journeying through valleys and mountains, forests and clearings, in time I believed God for the daughter I knew was meant to have the name on our hearts. After participating in an online Beth Moore Bible study named Believing God, my life transformed and to this day, believing God is engrained probably right into my DNA. My faith was so unmovable, so strong, in a matter of weeks I learned the reason for the miscarriage. A simple remedy was available and in less than three months, I was pregnant.

Sometimes God says wait.

This year this daughter with the name God gave her looked forward to her birthday like it was the day of all days. Oh the plans, the celebrations, the talk went on for months. Although most of us didn't quite get the hyper excitement of being four, we certainly felt this way when she turned one.

During her first year we honestly did not know if she would survive. When she was 6 weeks old she was diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism but we were told to re test in case of a false positive. We immediately did this and waited on the results. And waited. And waited. I knew if the diagnosis was positive, thyroid medication was essential for her proper development. I called the office where the receptionist read the chart herself and proclaimed her normal, no treatment needed. Problem? She read the wrong chart, she wasn't supposed to read any charts, and her very own in box had a note from the doctor saying the diagnosis was positive, please call us immediately for a prescription. Our baby missed nearly three weeks of medication.

A month later she had a cold and we took her to the doctor. We returned to that doctor even though we were very upset about what happened. That person had been let go and we were looking to change, but had not done so. It was just a cold, what could happen? He prescribed a medicine I questioned, but he encouraged us to give it. The next day when I felt an urge to check on her during nap, I found her gray and with barely a pulse. It took a pediatric intensive care unit from a hopsital two hours away to stabilize her. My prayer partner via phone stormed the gates of hell with her prayers for our overcomer's life. When she finished, I knew our daughter would live.

Sometimes God says yes.

From that croup gone wrong episode she battled RSV, and pneumonia. Because of the thyroid diagnosis she was put in the system and started to fall behind in development. She started therapy where we wanted her to move, babble, grasp, anything.

Sometimes God says wait.

So you can see why we were ecstatic when she turned one. Our pediatrician declared her a well child, his last words before we moved out of state. The very day we moved, she pulled herself to stand.

Always God says trust Me.

Now that she's four, she talks so much my head hurts sometimes. All the months and months she was non verbal and so behind her peers I'm just certain she was storing up she wanted to say, and she hasn't taken a breath since. She is walking, running, climbing and pretty confident in everything else physical. She has put her occupational skills to use by signing the first letter of her name to anything paper like Zorro. Her progress is not just amazing, it is miraculous.

Always God says trust Me.
