The Coming Of The Lord

by Greg Robbins
12/12/2016 / Bible Studies

There are a lot of promises and prophesies about both the first, and the second coming of Jesus Christ. It is altogether too easy to get caught up in the affairs of daily living and to lose sight of these facts. Jesus spoke of his second coming in both teaching and in parables. The Lord is warning us of his imminent return so that we may prepare ourselves, unless that day overcome us as a thief in the night. The modern teachers of the Bible would have us to believe that we only need to pray a sinner's prayer and maybe be baptized, and we are ready for his return. But that is against the entire weight of the scriptures concerning this subject. We are admonished and commanded to PREPARE ourselves for his return. The modern teachers claim that no preparation is necessary. And also remember that the moment that someone dies, the Lord has returned for them. The moment that you enter into eternity, it is for you, the same as if Jesus had returned to earth the second time. No one is guaranteed that tomorrow will come. Death comes to so many both quickly and at a young age. So we need to prepare ourselves and to be ready.

Malachi 3:1-6 "Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom you delight in: behold, he shall come, says the Lord of Hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? And who shall stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire, and like fuller's soap: and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years. And I will come near to you to judgement; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, says the Lord of Hosts. For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore you sons of Jacob are not consumed."

The Lord shall come to his temple SUDDENLY, it shall be totally unexpected. Jesus said that no one knows the day or the hour of his return, except his Father which is in heaven. Many have tried to predict the day and the hour of his return, and even in recent years we have seen this happen. But each and every time these people have been wrong. The word of the Lord cannot be broken. So it is an exercise in futility to attempt to predict the time of Jesus' second coming. The two witnesses who will appear at the wailing wall in Jerusalem could appear at any moment to prepare his way. Today could be that day. We do know that there are signs that tell of his coming, and they have all already appeared, the greatest being the founding of Israel as a nation on May 14, 1948.

Who may abide the day of his coming? And who shall stand when he appears? Jesus is returning as King and will judge the earth. Jesus came the first time to bear the sins of the world and to save his chosen ones. This next time will be for judgement. It will be as a refiner's fire to burn away the impurities from gold and silver. John the Baptist said that he would gather his wheat into his barn, and he would burn everything else. It will be a fearful and a terrible day for everyone who is not ready for his return. Peter said, that if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? There will be a trial by fire for each and every one of us. The impurities will be burned away. Those that have gold and silver mixed with impurities will become pure and be saved. Those who are lacking the gold and the silver will be cast into eternal flames of fire, never to escape them.

He says that the purification process will be to enable us to offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the old days. There was a time that the Lord delighted in Israel. The prophecies of Balaam the son of Beor are some of the most beautiful in the entire Bible.

Numbers 23:21-24 "He has not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither has he seen perverseness in Israel; the Lord his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them. God brought them out of Egypt; he has as it were the strength of a unicorn. Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What has God wrought! Behold the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down till he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain."

Numbers 24:5-9 "How goodly are your tents, O Jacob, and your tabernacles, O Israel! As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as trees of lign aloes which the Lord has planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters. He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted. God brought him forth out of Egypt; he has as it were the strength of a unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. He crouched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him? Blessed is he that blesses you, and cursed is he that curses you."

So there was a time that Israel and Jacob were RIGHTEOUS in these former times, before the coming of Jesus, and his death on the cross. The point being made is that righteousness is an ACTUAL RIGHTEOUSNESS demonstrated by holy living in obedience to God's commands. We cannot claim to be made righteous by faith in Jesus Christ if we continue to live as slaves to the flesh. Even Israel and Jacob lived holy lives at that point in time, thousands of years before Jesus came the first time. So if we have faith in Jesus Christ, then we should SURPASS them in holy living.

He promises to come near us to judgement. He shall be against the sorcerers, the adulterers, the false swearers, those who cheat the poor out of their wages, those who do not help the widow and the orphan, who do not help the needy stranger, and those who do not FEAR GOD. He says, "I am the Lord, I change not." And indeed he does not, for Jesus promised the identical things on the very last page of the Bible. So indeed he does not change at all.

Revelation 22:12-16 "And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I an Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie. I Jesus have sent my angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star."
