Dreams From God

Esther 6:1-3 "On that night the king could not sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of the records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king. And it was found written, that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's chamberlains, the keepers of the door, who sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus. And the king said, What honor and dignity has been done to Mordecai for this? Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him."


All throughout the Bible God has spoken to people through dreams. The dream has been so real and so troubling that the person who dreamed it took action in some way or another. Although God sometimes speaks to people through dreams, not all dreams come from God, and especially not nightmares. When God authors a dream, it is for the purpose of having a specific person to take action, and to do a specific thing. Here it is King Ahasuerus who dreams the dream that causes him to take action to reward Mordecai for his faithful and good deed, and to thereby save his life from destruction. So notice carefully that God has power to get kings to do his bidding when he so desires to do so, even pagan kings.


Genesis 20:1-8 "And Abraham journeyed from there toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar. And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, she is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, you are a dead man, for the woman that you have taken; for she is a man's wife. But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, will you slay also a righteous nation? Said he not unto me, She is my sister? And she, even she herself said, He is my brother: In the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. And God said unto him in a dream, Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart; for I also withheld you from sinning against me: therefore I suffered you not to touch her. Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for you, and you shall live: and if you restore her not, know that you shall surely die, you, and all that are yours. Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid."


How would you like it if God visited you in your dreams and told you, You are a dead man!"? That is exactly what God did to this heathen king. Normally a heathen king would not be worthy of a visit from Jehovah God. Yet this was a special circumstance. Abraham was God's covenant partner and Sarah would be the mother of Isaac the heir to Abraham, and to the covenant promise with Jehovah. It interests me greatly that God allowed this heathen king, Abimelech, to actually plead his case with God and to prove himself innocent before Jehovah. And God cleared him of all blame! These are rights normally reserved only for God's covenant partners. He was acquitted with a solemn warning that if he did not return Sarah to Abraham, that he would be a dead man. And all of this took place in a dream! Amazing!


Genesis 31:22-24 "And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled. And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven day's journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead. And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that you speak not to Jacob either good or bad."


Laban is the father-in-law of Jacob, who had cheated him for twenty years. Jacob took his wives, children, flocks of animals, possessions, and servants; and he fled from Laban. Laban got all of his brethren together and went after him to do him harm. But God appeared to Laban in a dream and told him not to do anything amiss to Jacob. Again, God spoke to a heathen man in a dream. He saved Jacob's life and all of the harm that would have been done to him and his family.


Genesis 41:1-45 "And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and behold, he stood by the river. And, behold, there came out of the river seven well favored cattle and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow. And, behold, seven other cattle came up after them out of the river, ill favored and lean fleshed; and stood by the other cattle upon the brink of the river. And the ill favored and lean fleshed cattle did eat up the seven well favored and fat cattle. So Pharaoh awoke. And he slept and dreamed the second time: and behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good. And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them. And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream. And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh. Then spoke the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day: Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in the ward in the captain of the guard's house, both me and the chief baker: and we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream. And there was there with us a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret. And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto my office, and him to be hanged. Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his clothing, and came in unto Pharaoh. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of you, that you can understand a dream to interpret it. And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, it is not in me; God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river: And, behold, there came out of the river seven cattle, fat fleshed and well favored; and they fed in a meadow: And, behold, seven other cattle came up after them, poor and very ill favored and lean fleshed, such as I never saw in the land of Egypt for badness: And the lean and the ill favored cattle did eat up the first seven fat cattle. And when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill favored, as at the beginning. So I awoke. And I saw in my dream, and , behold, seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good: And, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them: and the thin ears devoured the seven good ears: and I told this unto the magicians; but there was none that could declare it unto me. And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, the dream of Pharaoh is one: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do. The seven good cattle are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one. And the seven thin and ill favored cattle that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine. This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he has shown unto Pharaoh. Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt: And there shall arise seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land; And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of the famine following; for it shall be very grievous. And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt. Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years. And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine. And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants. And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the spirit of God is? And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God has showed you all this, there is none so discreet and wise as you are: You shall be over my house, and according unto your word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne shall I be greater than you. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without you shall no man lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath-paa-neah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potpherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt."


Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers. Then he was falsely accused and thrown into prison. In prison he heard the dreams of two of Pharaoh's officials, and he interpreted their dreams. All of his interpretations were correct because the spirit of God dwelt in him. Then when Pharaoh dreamed dreams and no one could interpret them, Joseph was remembered and called before Pharaoh. Joseph was a slave and also imprisoned. He was the least of the least in Egypt. He was also a foreigner without any friends to help him. His situation was absolutely hopeless from a human standpoint. Yet GOD spoke to the pagan Pharaoh and sent Joseph to interpret his dreams. Then Pharaoh made him the number two ruler in all of the land of Egypt. Joseph went from a slave in prison to the most powerful and richest ruler in Egypt. Pray and ask God to speak unto you in dreams and also to speak to others about your condition by means of dreams. It is a Biblical principle that very few people even pay any attention to. But you can take advantage of this powerful blessing if you begin to seek the Lord about it. "I am the Lord. I change not." If God would speak to so many pagans through dreams, Do you really think that he won't speak to you in dreams? I believe that he will do it. But you have not because you ask not. So start asking, and just continue asking without fainting. That is a sure recipe for success in prayer. The prophet Joel prophesied that the Lord would speak to ALL OF THE PEOPLE through visions and dreams. Why do you think this is not happening today? It is because people do not believe the promise and continually ask the Lord to do it in their lives. This should not seem strange to us, but natural, and become an everyday occurrence. We should take the Bible seriously and live it everyday.
